SUMMARY:Monday After Epiphany – Bautha of the Virgins
DESCRIPTION:Monday After Epiphany – Bautha of the Virgins \n  \nIsaiah 63:17-64:12 \n17 O Lord\, why do you make us err from your ways \nand harden our heart\, so that we fear you not? \nReturn for the sake of your servants\, \nthe tribes of your heritage. \n18 Your holy people possessed your sanctuary a little while; \nour adversaries have trodden it down. \n19 We have become like those over whom you have never ruled\, \nlike those who are not called by your name. \nPrayer for Mercy \n64 O that you would tear the heavens and come down\, \nthat the mountains might quake at your presence— \n2  as when fire kindles brushwood \nand the fire causes water to boil— \nto make your name known to your adversaries\, \nand that the nations might tremble at your presence! \n3 When you did terrible things which we looked not for\, \nyou came down\, the mountains quaked at your presence. \n4 From of old no one has heard \nor perceived by the ear\, \nno eye has seen a God besides you\, \nwho works for those who wait for him. \n5 You meet him that joyfully works righteousness\, \nthose that remember you in your ways. \nBehold\, you were angry\, and we sinned; \nin our sins we have been a long time\, and shall we be saved? \n6 We have all become like one who is unclean\, \nand all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. \nWe all fade like a leaf\, \nand our iniquities\, like the wind\, take us away. \n7 There is no one that calls upon your name\, \nthat bestirs himself to take hold of you; \nfor you have hidden your face from us\, \nand have delivered us into the hand of our iniquities. \n8 Yet\, O Lord\, you are our Father; \nwe are the clay\, and you are our potter; \nwe are all the work of your hand. \n9 Be not exceedingly angry\, O Lord\, \nand remember not iniquity for ever. \nBehold\, consider\, we are all your people. \n10 Your holy cities have become a wilderness\, \nZion has become a wilderness\, \nJerusalem a desolation. \n11 Our holy and beautiful house\, \nwhere our fathers praised you\, \nhas been burned by fire\, \nand all our pleasant places have become ruins. \n12 Will you restrain yourself at these things\, O Lord? \nWill you keep silent\, and afflict us sorely? \n  \nHabakkuk 3:1-19 \nHabakkuk’s Prayer \n3 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet\, according to Shigionoth. \n2 O Lord\, I have heard the report of you\, \nand your work\, O Lord\, I fear. \nIn the midst of the years renew it; \nin the midst of the years make it known; \nin wrath remember mercy. \n3 God came from Teman\, \nand the Holy One from Mount Paran. \nHis glory covered the heavens\, \nand the earth was full of his praise. \n4 His brightness was like the light\, \nrays flashed from his hand; \nand there he veiled his power. \n5 Before him went pestilence\, \nand plague followed close behind. \n6 He stood and measured the earth; \nhe looked and shook the nations; \nThen the eternal mountains were scattered\, \nthe everlasting hills sank low. \nHis ways were as of old. \n7 I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction; \nthe curtains of the land of Midian trembled. \n8 Was your wrath against the rivers\, O Lord? \nWas your anger against the rivers\, \nor your indignation against the sea\, \nwhen you rode upon your horses\, \nupon your chariot of victory? \n9 You stripped the sheath from your bow\, \nand put the arrows to the string. \nYou split the earth with rivers. \n10 The mountains saw you\, and writhed; \nthe raging waters swept on; \nthe deep gave forth its voice\, \nit lifted its hands on high. \n11 The sun and moon stood still in their habitation \nat the light of your arrows as they sped\, \nat the flash of your glittering spear. \n12 You bestrode the earth in fury\, \nyou trampled the nations in anger. \n13 You went forth for the salvation of your people\, \nfor the salvation of your anointed. \nYou crushed the head of the wicked\, \nlaying him bare from thigh to neck. \n14 You pierced with your shafts the head of his warriors\, \nwho came like a whirlwind to scatter me\, \nrejoicing as if to devour the poor in secret. \n15 You trampled the sea with your horses\, \nthe surging of mighty waters. \n16 I hear\, and my body trembles\, \nmy lips quiver at the sound; \nrottenness enters into my bones\, \nmy steps totter beneath me. \nI will quietly wait for the day of trouble \nto come upon people who invade us. \n17 Though the fig tree does not blossom\, \nnor fruit be on the vines\, \nthe produce of the olive fail \nand the fields yield no food\, \nthe flock be cut off from the fold \nand there be no herd in the stalls\, \n18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord\, \nI will joy in the God of my salvation. \n19 God\, the Lord\, is my strength; \nhe makes my feet like deer’s feet\, \nhe makes me tread upon my high places. \n  \n1Timothy 2:1-3:10 \nInstructions concerning Prayer \n2 First of all\, then\, I urge that supplications\, prayers\, intercessions\, and thanksgivings be made for all men\, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions\, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life\, godly and respectful in every way. 3 This is good\, and it is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior\, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God\, and there is one mediator between God and men\, the man Christ Jesus\, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all\, the testimony to which was given at the proper time. 7 For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle (I am telling the truth\, I am not lying)\, a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. \n8 I desire then that in every place the men should pray\, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; 9 also that women should adorn themselves modestly and sensibly in seemly apparel\, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly attire 10 but by good deeds\, as befits women who profess religion. 11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness. 12 I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to keep silent. 13 For Adam was formed first\, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived\, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet woman will be saved through bearing children\, if she continues in faith and love and holiness\, with modesty. \nQualifications of Bishops \n3 The saying is sure: If any one aspires to the office of bishop\, he desires a noble task. 2 Now a bishop must be above reproach\, the husband of one wife\, temperate\, sensible\, dignified\, hospitable\, an apt teacher\, 3 no drunkard\, not violent but gentle\, not quarrelsome\, and no lover of money. 4 He must manage his own household well\, keeping his children submissive and respectful in every way; 5 for if a man does not know how to manage his own household\, how can he care for God’s Church? 6 He must not be a recent convert\, or he may be puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil; 7 moreover he must be well thought of by outsiders\, or he may fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. \nQualifications of Deacons \n8 Deacons likewise must be serious\, not double-tongued\, not addicted to much wine\, not greedy for gain; 9 they must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 And let them also be tested first; then if they prove themselves blameless let them serve as deacons. \n  \nMatthew 18:23-35 \nThe Parable of the Unmerciful Servant \n23 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began the reckoning\, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; 25 and as he could not pay\, his lord ordered him to be sold\, with his wife and children and all that he had\, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant fell on his knees\, imploring him\, ‘Lord\, have patience with me\, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But that same servant\, as he went out\, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said\, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him\, ‘Have patience with me\, and I will pay you.’ 30 He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place\, they were greatly distressed\, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. 32 Then his lord summoned him and said to him\, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me; 33 and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant\, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his lord delivered him to the jailers\, till he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you\, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

SUMMARY:1st Sunday of Epiphany
DESCRIPTION:1st Sunday of Epiphany \n  \nExodus 3:1-15 \nThe Sons of Israel \n1These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob\, each with his household: 2 Reuben\, Simeon\, Levi\, and Judah\, 3 Issachar\, Zebulun\, and Benjamin\, 4 Dan and Naphtali\, Gad and Asher. 5 All the offspring of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. 6 Then Joseph died\, and all his brothers\, and all that generation. 7 But the descendants of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong; so that the land was filled with them. \nThe Israelites Are Oppressed by the Egyptians \n8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt\, who did not know Joseph. 9 And he said to his people\, “Behold\, the sons of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. 10  Come\, let us deal shrewdly with them\, lest they multiply\, and\, if war befall us\, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens; and they built for Pharaoh store-cities\, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they were oppressed\, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the sons of Israel. 13 So they made the sons of Israel serve with rigor\, 14 and made their lives bitter with hard service\, in mortar and brick\, and in all kinds of work in the field; in all their work they made them serve with rigor. \n  \nIsaiah 44:21-45:4 \n21 Remember these things\, O Jacob\, \nand Israel\, for you are my servant; \nI formed you\, you are my servant; \nO Israel\, you will not be forgotten by me. \n22 I have swept away your transgressions like a cloud\, \nand your sins like mist; \nreturn to me\, for I have redeemed you. \n23 Sing\, O heavens\, for the Lord has done it; \nshout\, O depths of the earth; \nbreak forth into singing\, O mountains\, \nO forest\, and every tree in it! \nFor the Lord has redeemed Jacob\, \nand will be glorified in Israel. \n24 Thus says the Lord\, your Redeemer\, \nwho formed you from the womb: \n“I am the Lord\, who made all things\, \nwho stretched out the heavens alone\, \nwho spread out the earth—Who was with me?— \n25 who frustrates the omens of liars\, \nand makes fools of diviners; \nwho turns wise men back\, \nand makes their knowledge foolish; \n26 who confirms the word of his servant\, \nand performs the counsel of his messengers; \nwho says of Jerusalem\, ‘She shall be inhabited\,’ \nand of the cities of Judah\, ‘They shall be built\, \nand I will raise up their ruins’; \n27 who says to the deep\, ‘Be dry\, \nI will dry up your rivers’; \n28 who says of Cyrus\, ‘He is my shepherd\, \nand he shall fulfill all my purpose’; \nsaying of Jerusalem\, ‘She shall be built\,’ \nand of the temple\, ‘Your foundation shall be laid.’ ” \nCyrus\, God’s Instrument \n45 Thus says the Lord to his anointed\, to Cyrus\, \nwhose right hand I have grasped\, \nto subdue nations before him \nand uncover the loins of kings\, \nto open doors before him \nthat gates may not be closed: \n2 “I will go before you \nand level the mountains\, \nI will break in pieces the doors of bronze \nand cut asunder the bars of iron\, \n3 I will give you the treasures of darkness \nand the hoards in secret places\, \nthat you may know that it is I\, the Lord\, \nthe God of Israel\, who call you by your name. \n4 For the sake of my servant Jacob\, \nand Israel my chosen\, \nI call you by your name\, \nI surname you\, though you do not know me. \n  \n2Timothy 3:1-15 \nGodlessness in the Last Days \n1 But understand this\, that in the last days there will come times of stress. 2 For men will be lovers of self\, lovers of money\, proud\, arrogant\, abusive\, disobedient to their parents\, ungrateful\, unholy\, 3 inhuman\, implacable\, slanderers\, profligates\, fierce\, haters of good\, 4 treacherous\, reckless\, swollen with conceit\, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God\, 5 holding the form of religion but denying the power of it. Avoid such people. 6 For among them are those who make their way into households and capture weak women\, burdened with sins and swayed by various impulses\, 7 who will listen to anybody and can never arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 8  As Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses\, so these men also oppose the truth\, men of corrupt mind and counterfeit faith; 9 but they will not get very far\, for their folly will be plain to all\, as was that of those two men. \nPaul’s Charge to Timothy \n10 Now you have observed my teaching\, my conduct\, my aim in life\, my faith\, my patience\, my love\, my steadfastness\, 11 my persecutions\, my sufferings\, what befell me at Antioch\, at Iconium\, and at Lystra\, what persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted\, 13 while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse\, deceivers and deceived. 14 But as for you\, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed\, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the Sacred Writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. \n  \nLuke 4:14-30 \nJesus Begins Preaching and Teaching in Galilee \n14  And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee\, and a report concerning him went out through all the surrounding country. 15  And he taught in their synagogues\, being glorified by all. \nThe Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth \n16  And he came to Nazareth\, where he had been brought up; and he went to the synagogue\, as was his custom\, on the sabbath day. And he stood up to read; 17 and there was given to him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened the book and found the place where it was written\, \n18  The Spirit of the Lord is upon me\, \nbecause he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. \nHe has sent me to proclaim release to the captives \nand recovering of sight to the blind\, \nto set at liberty those who are oppressed\, \n19 to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” \n20 And he closed the book\, and gave it back to the attendant\, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them\, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him\, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth; and they said\, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” 23 And he said to them\, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb\, ‘Physician\, heal yourself; what we have heard you did at Capernaum\, do here also in your own country.’ ” 24 And he said\, “Truly\, I say to you\, no prophet is acceptable in his own country. 25  But in truth\, I tell you\, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah\, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months\, when there came a great famine over all the land; 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath\, in the land of Sidon\, to a woman who was a widow. 27  And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha; and none of them was cleansed\, but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When they heard this\, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29  And they rose up and put him out of the city\, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built\, that they might throw him down headlong. 30  But passing through the midst of them he went away. \n

SUMMARY:1st Friday of Epiphany – Memorial of St. John the Baptist
DESCRIPTION:1st Friday of Epiphany – Memorial of St. John the Baptist \n  \nIsaiah 35:3-10; Isaiah 40:1-8 \nThe Lord Will Come to Save \n3 Strengthen the weak hands\, \nand make firm the feeble knees. \n4 Say to those who are of a fearful heart\, \n“Be strong\, fear not! \nBehold\, your God \nwill come with vengeance\, \nwith the recompense of God. \nHe will come and save you.” \n5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened\, \nand the ears of the deaf unstopped; \n6 then shall the lame man leap like a deer\, \nand the tongue of the mute sing for joy. \nFor waters shall break forth in the wilderness\, \nand streams in the desert; \n7 the burning sand shall become a pool\, \nand the thirsty ground springs of water; \nthe haunt of jackals shall become a swamp\, \nthe grass shall become reeds and rushes. \n8 And a highway shall be there\, \nand it shall be called the Holy Way; \nthe unclean shall not pass over it\, \nand fools shall not err therein. \n9 No lion shall be there\, \nnor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; \nthey shall not be found there\, \nbut the redeemed shall walk there. \n10 And the ransomed of the Lord shall return\, \nand come to Zion with singing; \neverlasting joy shall be upon their heads; \nthey shall obtain joy and gladness\, \nand sorrow and sighing shall flee away. \nGod Comforts His People \n40 Comfort\, comfort my people\, says your God. \n2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem\, \nand cry to her \nthat her warfare is ended\, \nthat her iniquity is pardoned\, \nthat she has received from the Lord’s hand \ndouble for all her sins. \n3 A voice cries: \n“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord\, \nmake straight in the desert a highway for our God. \n4 Every valley shall be lifted up\, \nand every mountain and hill be made low; \nthe uneven ground shall become level\, \nand the rough places a plain. \n5 And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed\, \nand all flesh shall see it together\, \nfor the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” \n6 A voice says\, “Cry!” \nAnd I said\, “What shall I cry!” \nAll flesh is grass\, \nand all its beauty is like the flower of the field. \n7 The grass withers\, the flower fades\, \nwhen the breath of the Lord blows upon it; \nsurely the people is grass. \n8 The grass withers\, the flower fades; \nbut the word of our God will stand for ever. \n  \nActs of the Apostles 13:13-33 \nPaul and Barnabas in Antioch of Pisidia \n13 Now Paul and his company set sail from Paphos\, and came to Perga in Pamphylia. And John left them and returned to Jerusalem; 14 but they passed on from Perga and came to Antioch of Pisidia. And on the sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down. 15 After the reading of the law and the prophets\, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them\, saying\, “Brethren\, if you have any word of exhortation for the people\, say it.” 16 So Paul stood up\, and motioning with his hand said: \n“Men of Israel\, and you that fear God\, listen. 17 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt\, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it. 18 And for about forty years he bore with them in the wilderness. 19 And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan\, he gave them their land as an inheritance\, for about four hundred and fifty years. 20 And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. 21 Then they asked for a king; and God gave them Saul the son of Kish\, a man of the tribe of Benjamin\, for forty years. 22 And when he had removed him\, he raised up David to be their king; of whom he testified and said\, ‘I have found in David\, the son of Jesse\, a man after my heart\, who will do all my will.’ 23 Of this man’s posterity God has brought to Israel a Savior\, Jesus\, as he promised. 24 Before his coming John had preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And as John was finishing his course\, he said\, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No\, but after me one is coming\, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’ \n26 “Brethren\, sons of the family of Abraham\, and those among you that fear God\, to us has been sent the message of this salvation. 27 For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers\, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets which are read every sabbath\, fulfilled these by condemning him. 28 Though they could charge him with nothing deserving death\, yet they asked Pilate to have him killed. 29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him\, they took him down from the tree\, and laid him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead; 31 and for many days he appeared to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem\, who are now his witnesses to the people. 32 And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers\, 33 this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm\, \n‘You are my Son\, \ntoday I have begotten you.’ \n  \nEphesians 2:19-3:21 \n19 So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners\, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God\, 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets\, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone\, 21 in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22 in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. \nPaul’s Ministry to the Gentiles \n3 For this reason I\, Paul\, a prisoner for Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles—2 assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for you\, 3 how the mystery was made known to me by revelation\, as I have written briefly. 4 When you read this you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ\, 5 which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; 6 that is\, how the Gentiles are fellow heirs\, members of the same body\, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. \n7 Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God’s grace which was given me by the working of his power. 8 To me\, though I am the very least of all the saints\, this grace was given\, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ\, 9 and to make all men see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; 10 that through the Church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places. 11 This was according to the eternal purpose which he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord\, 12 in whom we have boldness and confidence of access through our faith in him. 13 So I ask you not to lose heart over what I am suffering for you\, which is your glory. \nPrayer for the Ephesians \n14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father\, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named\, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with might through his Spirit in the inner man\, 17 and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you\, being rooted and grounded in love\, 18 may have power to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth\, 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge\, that you may be filled with all the fulness of God. \n20 Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think\, 21 to him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus to all generations\, for ever and ever. Amen. \n  \nMark 6:14-29 \nThe Death of John the Baptist \n14 King Herod heard of it; for Jesus’ name had become known. Some said\, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him.” 15 But others said\, “It is Elijah.” And others said\, “It is a prophet\, like one of the prophets of old.” 16 But when Herod heard of it he said\, “John\, whom I beheaded\, has been raised.” 17 For Herod had sent and seized John\, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias\, his brother Philip’s wife; because he had married her. 18 For John said to Herod\, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” 19 And Herodias had a grudge against him\, and wanted to kill him. But she could not\, 20 for Herod feared John\, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man\, and kept him safe. When he heard him\, he was much perplexed; and yet he heard him gladly. 21 But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and the leading men of Galilee. 22 For when Herodias’ daughter came in and danced\, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl\, “Ask me for whatever you wish\, and I will grant it.” 23 And he vowed to her\, “Whatever you ask me\, I will give you\, even half of my kingdom.” 24 And she went out\, and said to her mother\, “What shall I ask?” And she said\, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king\, and asked\, saying\, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” 26 And the king was exceedingly sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. 27 And immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard and gave orders to bring his head. He went and beheaded him in the prison\, 28 and brought his head on a platter\, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard of it\, they came and took his body\, and laid it in a tomb.

SUMMARY:Feast of the Epiphany
DESCRIPTION:Feast of the Epiphany \n  \nNumbers 24:2-9\, 15-25 \nBalaam’s Third Oracle \n2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes\, and saw Israel encamping tribe by tribe. And the Spirit of God came upon him\, 3 and he took up his discourse\, and said\, \n“The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor\, \nthe oracle of the man whose eye is opened\, \n4 the oracle of him who hears the words of God\, \nwho sees the vision of the Almighty\, \nfalling down\, but having his eyes uncovered: \n5 How fair are your tents\, O Jacob\, \nyour encampments\, O Israel! \n6 Like valleys that stretch afar\, \nlike gardens beside a river\, \nlike aloes that the Lord has planted\, \nlike cedar trees beside the waters. \n7 Water shall flow from his buckets\, \nand his seed shall be in many waters\, \nhis king shall be higher than Agag\, \nand his kingdom shall be exalted. \n8 God brings him out of Egypt; \nhe has as it were the horns of the wild ox\, \nhe shall eat up the nations his adversaries\, \nand shall break their bones in pieces\, \nand pierce them through with his arrows. \n9  He lurked\, he lay down like a lion\, \nand like a lioness; who will rouse him up? \nBlessed be every one who blesses you\, \nand cursed be every one who curses you.” \n15 And he took up his discourse\, and said\, \n“The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor\, \nthe oracle of the man whose eye is opened\, \n16 the oracle of him who hears the words of God\, \nand knows the knowledge of the Most High\, \nwho sees the vision of the Almighty\, \nfalling down\, but having his eyes uncovered: \n17 I see him\, but not now; \nI behold him\, but not near: \na star shall come forth out of Jacob\, \nand a scepter shall rise out of Israel; \nit shall crush the forehead of Moab\, \nand break down all the sons of Sheth. \n18 Edom shall be dispossessed\, \nSeir also\, his enemies\, shall be dispossessed\, \nwhile Israel does valiantly. \n19 By Jacob shall dominion be exercised\, \nand the survivors of cities be destroyed!” \n20 Then he looked on Amalek\, and took up his discourse\, and said\, \n“Amalek was the first of the nations\, \nbut in the end he shall come to destruction.” \n21 And he looked on the Kenite\, and took up his discourse\, and said\, \n“Enduring is your dwelling place\, \nand your nest is set in the rock; \n22 nevertheless Kain shall be wasted. \nHow long shall Asshur take you away captive!” \n23 And he took up his discourse\, and said\, \n“Alas\, who shall live when God does this? \n24 But ships shall come from Kittim \nand shall afflict Asshur and Eber; \nand he also shall come to destruction.” \n25 Then Balaam rose\, and went back to his place; and Balak also went his way. \n  \nIsaiah 4:2-5\, 11:1-5; 12:4-6 \n2 In that day the branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious\, and the fruit of the land shall be the pride and glory of the survivors of Israel. 3 And he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy\, every one who has been recorded for life in Jerusalem\, 4 when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgment and by a spirit of burning. 5 Then the Lordwill create over the whole site of Mount Zion and over her assemblies a cloud by day\, and smoke and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory there will be a canopy and a pavilion. \nThe Shoot from the Stump of Jesse and the Peaceful Kingdom \n1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse\, \nand a branch shall grow out of his roots. \n2  And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him\, \nthe spirit of wisdom and understanding\, \nthe spirit of counsel and might\, \nthe spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. \n3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. \nHe shall not judge by what his eyes see\, \nor decide by what his ears hear; \n4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor\, \nand decide with equity for the meek of the earth; \nand he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth\, \nand with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. \n5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist\, \nand faithfulness the belt of his loins. \n4 And you will say in that day: \n“Give thanks to the Lord\, \ncall upon his name; \nmake known his deeds among the nations\, \nproclaim that his name is exalted. \n5 “Sing praises to the Lord\, for he has done gloriously; \nlet this be known in all the earth. \n6 Shout\, and sing for joy\, O inhabitant of Zion\, \nfor great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.” \n  \n  \nTitus 2:11-3:7 \n11 For the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men\, 12 training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions\, and to live sober\, upright\, and godly lives in this world\, 13 awaiting our blessed hope\, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ\, 14  who gave himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. \n15 Declare these things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you. \nMaintain Good Deeds \n1 Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities\, to be obedient\, to be ready for any honest work\, 2 to speak evil of no one\, to avoid quarreling\, to be gentle\, and to show perfect courtesy toward all men. 3 For we ourselves were once foolish\, disobedient\, led astray\, slaves to various passions and pleasures\, passing our days in malice and envy\, hated by men and hating one another; 4 but when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared\, 5 he saved us\, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness\, but in virtue of his own mercy\, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit\, 6 which he poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior\, 7 so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. \n  \nMatthew 3:1-17 \nThe Preaching of John the Baptist \n3 In those days came John the Baptist\, preaching in the wilderness of Judea\, 2 Repent\, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” 3  For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said\, \n“The voice of one crying in the wilderness: \nPrepare the way of the Lord\, \nmake his paths straight.” \n4 Now John wore a garment of camel’s hair\, and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan\, 6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan\, confessing their sins. \n7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism\, he said to them\, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruit that befits repentance\, 9 and do not presume to say to yourselves\, ‘We have Abraham as our father’; for I tell you\, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 10  Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. \n11 “I baptize you with water for repentance\, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I\, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 12  His winnowing fork is in his hand\, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the granary\, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” \nThe Baptism of Jesus \n13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John\, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him\, saying\, “I need to be baptized by you\, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him\, “Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized\, he went up immediately from the water\, and behold\, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove\, and alighting on him; 17 and behold\, a voice from heaven\, saying\, “This is my beloved Son\, with whom I am well pleased.”

SUMMARY:2nd Sunday after Christmas
DESCRIPTION:2nd Sunday after Christmas \n  \nExodus 2:1-10 \n  \nThe Sons of Israel \n1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob\, each with his household: 2 Reuben\, Simeon\, Levi\, and Judah\, 3 Issachar\, Zebulun\, and Benjamin\, 4 Dan and Naphtali\, Gad and Asher. 10 Come\, let us deal shrewdly with them\, lest they multiply\, and\, if war befall us\, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” \n  \n  \nIsaiah 49:1-6 \n  \n1 Listen to me\, O islands\, and pay attention\, you peoples from afar. The Lord called me from the womb\, from the body of my mother he named my name. 2 He made my mouth like a sharp sword\, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow\, in his quiver he hid me away. 3 And he said to me\, “You are my servant\, Israel\, in whom I will be glorified.” \n4 But I said\, “I have labored in vain\, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my right is with the Lord\, and my recompense with my God.” 5 And now the Lord says\, who formed me from the womb to be his servant\, to bring Jacob back to him\, and that Israel might be gathered to him\, for I am honored in the eyes of the Lord\, and my God has become my strength— 6 he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the preserved of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations\, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” \n  \n2Timothy 2:16-26 \n  \nA Workman Approved by God \n  \n16 Avoid such godless chatter\, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness\, 17 and their talk will eat its way like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus\, 18 who have swerved from the truth by holding that the resurrection is past already. They are upsetting the faith of some. 19 But God’s firm foundation stands\, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his\,” and\, “Let every one who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.” \n20 In a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and earthenware\, and some for noble use\, some for ignoble. 21 If any one purifies himself from what is ignoble\, then he will be a vessel for noble use\, consecrated and useful to the master of the house\, ready for any good work. 22 So shun youthful passions and aim at righteousness\, faith\, love\, and peace\, along with those who call upon the Lord from a pure heart. 23 Have nothing to do with stupid\, senseless controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. 24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kindly to every one\, an apt teacher\, forbearing\, 25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant that they will repent and come to know the truth\, 26 and they may escape from the snare of the devil\, after being captured by him to do his will. \n  \n  \nLuke 2:21-52 \n  \nJesus Is Circumcised and Named \n21 And at the end of eight days\, when he was circumcised\, he was called Jesus\, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. \nJesus Is Presented in the Temple \n22 And when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses\, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord\, “Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord\, “a pair of turtledoves\, or two young pigeons.” 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem\, whose name was Simeon\, and this man was righteous and devout\, looking for the consolation of Israel\, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus\, to do for him according to the custom of the law\, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said\, 29 “Lord\, now let your servant depart in peace\, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples\, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles\, and for glory to your people Israel.” 33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him; 34 and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother\, “Behold\, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel\, and for a sign that is spoken against 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also)\, that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.” 36 And there was a prophetess\, Anna\, the daughter of Phanuel\, of the tribe of Asher; she was of a great age\, having lived with her husband seven years from her virginity\, 37 and as a widow till she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple\, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks to God\, and spoke of him to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. \nThe Return to Nazareth \n39 And when they had performed everything according to the law of the Lord\, they returned into Galilee\, to their own city\, Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong\, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. \nThe Boy Jesus in the Temple \n41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old\, they went up according to custom; 43 and when the feast was ended\, as they were returning\, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it\, 44 but supposing him to be in the company they went a day’s journey\, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances; 45 and when they did not find him\, they returned to Jerusalem\, seeking him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple\, sitting among the teachers\, listening to them and asking them questions; 47 and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 And when they saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him\, “Son\, why have you treated us so? Behold\, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously.” 49 And he said to them\, “How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” 50 And they did not understand the saying which he spoke to them. 51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth\, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature\,and in favor with God and man.

SUMMARY:Feast of the Circumcision of the Lord
DESCRIPTION:Feast of the Circumcision of the Lord \n  \nGenesis 17:1-22 \n  \nSix Days of Creation and the Sabbath \n1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void\, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. 3 And God said\, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day\, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning\, one day. 6 And God said\, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters\, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 And God made the firmament and separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament. And it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning\, a second day. 9 And God said\, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place\, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth\, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11 And God said\, “Let the earth put forth vegetation\, plants yielding seed\, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed\, each according to its kind\, upon the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation\, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds\, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed\, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning\, a third day. 14 And God said\, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years\, 15 and let them be lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights\, the greater light to rule the day\, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. 17 And God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth\, 18 to rule over the day and over the night\, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning\, a fourth day. 20 And God said\, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures\, and let birds fly above the earth across the firmament of the heavens.” 21 So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves\, with which the waters swarm\, according to their kinds\, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them\, saying\, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas\, and let birds multiply on the earth.” \n  \nIsaiah 42:18-25 \n  \n18 Hear\, you deaf; and look\, you blind\, that you may see! 19 Who is blind but my servant\, or deaf as my messenger whom I send? Who is blind as my dedicated one\, or blind as the servant of the Lord? 20 He sees many things\, but does not observe them; his ears are open\, but he does not hear. 21 The Lord was pleased\, for his righteousness’ sake\, to magnify his law and make it glorious. 22 But this is a people robbed and plundered\, they are all of them trapped in holes and hidden in prisons; they have become a prey with none to rescue\, a spoil with none to say\, “Restore!” 23 Who among you will give ear to this\, will attend and listen for the time to come? \n24 Who gave up Jacob to the spoiler\, and Israel to the robbers? Was it not the Lord\, against whom we have sinned\, in whose ways they would not walk\, and whose law they would not obey? 25 So he poured upon him the heat of his anger and the might of battle; it set him on fire round about\, but he did not understand; it burned him\, but he did not take it to heart. \n  \n  \nGalatians 5:13-26 \n  \n13 For you were called to freedom\, brethren; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh\, but through love be servants of one another. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word\, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another take heed that you are not consumed by one another. \nThe Works of the Flesh and the Fruit of the Spirit \n16 But I say\, walk by the Spirit\, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit\, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh; for these are opposed to each other\, to prevent you from doing what you would. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law. 19 ow the works of the flesh are plain: immorality\, impurity\, licentiousness\, 20 idolatry\, sorcery\, enmity\, strife\, jealousy\, anger\, selfishness\, dissension\, party spirit\, 21 envy\, drunkenness\, carousing\, and the like. I warn you\, as I warned you before\, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love\, joy\, peace\, patience\, kindness\, goodness\, faithfulness\, 23 gentleness\, self-control; against such there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit\, let us also walk by the Spirit. 26 Let us have no self-conceit\, no provoking of one another\, no envy of one another. \n  \n  \nLuke 2:21-40\, 52 \nThe Birth of John the Baptist Foretold \n  \n21 And at the end of eight days\, when he was circumcised\, he was called Jesus\, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. 27 And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus\, to do for him according to the custom of the law\, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said\, 29 “Lord\, now let your servant depart in peace\, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples\, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles\, and for glory to your people Israel.” 33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him; 34 and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother\, “Behold\, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel\, and for a sign that is spoken against 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also)\, \nthat thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.” 36 And there was a prophetess\, Anna\, the daughter of Phanuel\, of the tribe of Asher; she was of a great age\, having lived with her husband seven years from her virginity\, 37 and as a widow till she was eighty-four. SUMMARY:1st Sunday after Christmas
DESCRIPTION:1st Sunday after Christmas \n  \nGenesis 21:1-21 \n  \n1 The Lord visited Sarah as he had said\, and the Lorddid to Sarah as he had promised. 2 And Sarah conceived\, and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him. 3 Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him\, whom Sarah bore him\, Isaac. 4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old\, as God had commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 And Sarah said\, “God has made laughter for me; every one who hears will laugh over me.” 7 And she said\, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would suckle children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.” \nHagar and Ishmael Sent Away \n8 And the child grew\, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. 9 But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian\, whom she had borne to Abraham\, playing with her son Isaac. 10 So she said to Abraham\, “Cast out this slave woman with her son; for the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.” 11 And the thing was very displeasing to Abraham on account of his son. 12 But God said to Abraham\, “Be not displeased because of the lad and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you\, do as she tells you\, for through Isaac shall your descendants be named. 13 And I will make a nation of the son of the slave woman also\, because he is your offspring.” 14 So Abraham rose early in the morning\, and took bread and a skin of water\, and gave it to Hagar\, putting it on her shoulder\, along with the child\, and sent her away. And she departed\, and wandered in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.15 When the water in the skin was gone\, she cast the child under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went\, and sat down over against him a good way off\, about the distance of a bowshot; for she said\, “Let me not look upon the death of the child.” And as she sat over against him\, the child lifted up his voice and wept. 17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven\, and said to her\, “What troubles you\, Hagar? Fear not; for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise\, lift up the lad\, and hold him fast with your hand; for I will make him a great nation.” 19 Then God opened her eyes\, and she saw a well of water; and she went\, and filled the skin with water\, and gave the lad a drink. 20 And God was with the lad\, and he grew up; he lived in the wilderness\, and became an expert with the bow. 21 He lived in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt. \n  \n1Samuel 1:19-28 \n  \n19 They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife\, and the Lordremembered her; 20 and in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son\, and she called his name Samuel\, for she said\, “I have asked him of the Lord.” 21 And the man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice\, and to pay his vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up\, for she said to her husband\, “As soon as the child is weaned\, I will bring him\, that he may appear in the presence of the Lord\, and abide there for ever.” 23 Elkanah her husband said to her\, “Do what seems best to you\, wait until you have weaned him; only\, may the Lord establish his word.” So the woman remained and nursed her son\, until she weaned him. 24 And when she had weaned him\, she took him up with her\, along with a three-year-old bull\, an ephah of flour\, and a skin of wine; and she brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh; and the child was young. 25 Then they slew the bull\, and they brought the child to Eli. 26 And she said\, “Oh\, my lord! As you live\, my lord\, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence\, praying to the Lord. 27 For this child I prayed; and the Lord has granted me my petition which I made to him. 28 Therefore I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives\, he is lent to the Lord.” \nAnd they worshiped the Lord there. \n  \nGalatians 4:18-5:1 \nPaul Reproves the Galatians \n18 For a good purpose it is always good to be made much of\, and not only when I am present with you. 19 My little children\, with whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you! 20 I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone\, for I am perplexed about you. \nThe Allegory of Hagar and Sarah \n21 Tell me\, you who desire to be under law\, do you not hear the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons\, one by a slave and one by a free woman. 23 But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh\, the son of the free woman through promise. 24 Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai\, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem\, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free\, and she is our mother. 27 For it is written\, “Rejoice\, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and shout\, you who are not with labor pains; for the desolate has more children than she who has a husband.” 28 Now we\, brethren\, like Isaac\, are children of promise. 29 But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit\, so it is now. 30 But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave and her son; for the son of the slave shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31 So\, brethren\, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman. \nChristian Freedom \n1 For freedom Christ has set us free; stand fast therefore\, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMatthew 2:1-23 \n  \n1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king\, behold\, Wise Men from the East came to Jerusalem\, saying\, 2 Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East\, and have come to worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this\, he was troubled\, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people\, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him\, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: 6 ‘And you\, O Bethlehem\, in the land of Judah\, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler \nwho will govern my people Israel.’ ” 7 Then Herod summoned the Wise Men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; 8 and he sent them to Bethlehem\, saying\, “Go and search diligently for the child\, and when you have found him bring me word\, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 When they had heard the king they went their way; and behold\, the star which they had seen in the East went before them\, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star\, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; 11 and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother\, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then\, opening their treasures\, they offered him gifts\, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod\, they departed to their own country by another way. \nThe Escape to Egypt \n13 Now when they had departed\, behold\, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said\, “Rise\, take the child and his mother\, and flee to Egypt\, and remain there till I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child\, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night\, and departed to Egypt\, 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet\, “Out of Egypt have I called my son.” \n16 Then Herod\, when he saw that he had been tricked by the Wise Men\, was in a furious rage\, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under\, according to the time which he had ascertained from the Wise Men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: 18 “A voice was heard in Ramah\, wailing and loud lamentation\, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled\, because they were no more.” \nThe Return from Egypt \n19 But when Herod died\, behold\, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt\, saying\, 20 “Rise\, take the child and his mother\, and go to the land of Israel\, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.” 21 And he rose and took the child and his mother\, and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus reigned over Judea in place of his father Herod\, he was afraid to go there\, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. 23 And he went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth\, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled. “He shall be called a Nazarene.”

SUMMARY:Feast of the Holy Innocents
DESCRIPTION:Feast of the Holy Innocents – December 27 \n  \nFrom the Memorial of All Martyrs & Confessors \nDaniel 3:25-45 \n  \nFrom the Memorial of All Martyrs & Confessors \nActs of the Apostles 6:8-15 \n  \nThe Arrest of Stephen \n  \n8 And Stephen\, full of grace and power\, did great wonders and signs among the people. 9 Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)\, and of the Cyrenians\, and of the Alexandrians\, and of those from Cilicia and Asia\, arose and disputed with Stephen. 10 But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke. 11 Then they secretly instigated men\, who said\, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 12 And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes\, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council\, 13 and set up false witnesses who said\, “This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law; 14 for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place\, and will change the customs which Moses delivered to us.” 15 And gazing at him\, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel. \n  \nFrom the Memorial of All Martyrs & Confessors \nHebrews 11:3-10\, 32-12:2 \n  \n3 By faith we understand that the world was created by the word of God\, so that what is seen was made out of things which do not appear. \nThe Examples of Abel\, Enoch\, and Noah \n4 By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain\, through which he received approval as righteous\, God bearing witness by accepting his gifts; he died\, but through his faith he is still speaking. 5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death; and he was not found\, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was attested as having pleased God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. 7 By faith Noah\, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen\, took heed and constructed an ark for the saving of his household; by this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness which comes by faith. \nThe Faith of Abraham \n8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place which he was to receive as an inheritance; and he went out\, not knowing where he was to go. 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise\, as in a foreign land\, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob\, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he looked forward to the city which has foundations\, whose builder and maker is God. \n  \nMatthew 2:13-18 \n  \nThe Escape to Egypt \n13 Now when they had departed\, behold\, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said\, “Rise\, take the child and his mother\, and flee to Egypt\, and remain there till I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child\, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night\, and departed to Egypt\, 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: 18  “A voice was heard in Ramah\, wailing and loud lamentation\, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled\, \nbecause they were no more.”

SUMMARY:Feast of the Virgin Mary
DESCRIPTION:Feast of the Virgin Mary – December 26 \nExodus 15:11-21; Micah 6:1-5; Jeremiah 31:13-17 \n11 “Who is like you\, O Lord\, among the gods? Who is like you\, majestic in holiness\, terrible in glorious deeds\, doing wonders? 12 You stretched out your right hand\, the earth swallowed them.13 “You have led in your merciful love the people whom you have redeemed\, \nyou have guided them by your strength to your holy abode. 14 The peoples have heard\, they tremble; pangs have seized on the inhabitants of Philistia. 15 Now are the chiefs of Edom dismayed; the leaders of Moab\, trembling seizes them; all the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away. 16 Terror and dread fall upon them; because of the greatness of your arm\, they are as still as a stone\, till your people\, O Lord\, pass by\, till the people pass by whom you have purchased.17 You will bring them in\, and plant them on your own mountain\, the place\, O Lord\, which you have made for your abode\, the sanctuary\, O Lord\, which your hands have established. 18 The Lord will reign for ever and ever.” 19 For when the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea\, the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them; but the sons of Israel walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea. 20 Then Miriam\, the prophetess\, the sister of Aaron\, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and dancing. 21 And Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the Lord\, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.” \n  \nWhat the Lord Requires \nHear what the Lord says: Arise\, plead your case before the mountains\, and let the hills hear your voice. 2 Hear\, you mountains\, the controversy of the Lord\, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for the Lord has a controversy with his people\, and he will contend with Israel. 3 “O my people\, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me! 4 For I brought you up from the land of Egypt\, and redeemed you from the house of bondage; and I sent before you Moses\, Aaron\, and Miriam. 5 O my people\, remember what Balak king of Moab devised\, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him\, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal\, that you may know the saving acts of the Lord.” \n13 Then shall the maidens rejoice in the dance\, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy\, will comfort them\, and give them gladness for sorrow. 14 I will feast the soul of the priests with abundance\, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness\, says the Lord.” 15 Thus says the Lord: “A voice is heard in Ramah\, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children\, because they are not.” 16 Thus says the Lord: “Keep your voice from weeping\, and your eyes from tears; for your work shall be rewarded\, says the Lord\, and they shall come back from the land of the enemy. 17 There is hope for your future\, says the Lord\, and your children shall come back to their own country \n  \nActs of the Apostles 1:1-14 \n  \nIn the first book\, O Theophilus\, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach\, 2 until the day when he was taken up\, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs\, appearing to them during forty days\, and speaking of the kingdom of God. 4 And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem\, but to wait for the promise of the Father\, which\, he said\, “you heard from me\, 5 for John baptized with water\, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” \nThe Ascension of Jesus \n6 So when they had come together\, they asked him\, “Lord\, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them\, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said this\, as they were looking on\, he was lifted up\, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went\, behold\, two men stood by them in white robes\, 11 and said\, “Men of Galilee\, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus\, who was taken up from you into heaven\, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” \nMatthias Chosen to Replace Judas \n  \n12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet\, which is near Jerusalem\, a sabbath day’s journey away; 13 and when they had entered\, they went up to the upper room\, where they were staying\, Peter and John and James and Andrew\, Philip and Thomas\, Bartholomew and Matthew\, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. 14 All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer\, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus\, and with his brethren. \n  \nRomans 16:1-27 \nPersonal Greetings \nI commend to you our sister Phoebe\, a deaconess of the Church at Cenchre-ae\, 2 that you may receive her in the Lord as befits the saints\, and help her in whatever she may require from you\, for she has been a helper of many and of myself as well. 3 Greet Prisca and Aquila\, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus\, 4 who risked their necks for my life\, to whom not only I but also all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks; 5 greet also the church in their house. Greet my beloved Epaenetus\, who was the first convert in Asia for Christ. 6 Greet Mary\, who has worked hard among you. 7 Greet Andronicus and Junias\, my kinsmen and my fellow prisoners; they are men of note among the apostles\, and they were in Christ before me. 8 Greet Ampliatus\, my beloved in the Lord. 9 Greet Urbanus\, our fellow worker in Christ\, and my beloved Stachys. 10 Greet Apelles\, who is approved in Christ. Greet those who belong to the family of Aristobulus. 11 Greet my kinsman Herodion. Greet those in the Lord who belong to the family of Narcissus. 12 Greet those workers in the Lord\, Tryphaena and Tryphosa. Greet the beloved Persis\, who has worked hard in the Lord. 13 Greet Rufus\, eminent in the Lord\, also his mother and mine. 14 Greet Asyncritus\, Phlegon\, Hermes\, Patrobas\, Hermas\, and the brethren who are with them. 15 Greet Philologus\, Julia\, Nereus and his sister\, and Olympas\, and all the saints who are with them. 16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you. \nFinal Instructions \n17 I appeal to you\, brethren\, to take note of those who create dissensions and difficulties\, in opposition to the doctrine which you have been taught; avoid them. 18 For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ\, but their own appetites\,and by fair and flattering words they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded. 19 For while your obedience is known to all\, so that I rejoice over you\, I would have you wise as to what is good and guileless as to what is evil; 20 then the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. \n21 Timothy\, my fellow worker\, greets you; so do Lucius and Jason and Sosipater\, my kinsmen.22 I Tertius\, the writer of this letter\, greet you in the Lord 23 Gaius\, who is host to me and to the whole Church\, greets you. Erastus\, the city treasurer\, and our brother Quartus\, greet you. \nFinal Doxology \n  \n25 Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ\, according to the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret for long ages 26 but is now disclosed and through the prophetic writings is made known to all nations\, according to the command of the eternal God\, to bring about the obedience of faith—27 to the only wise God be glory for evermore through Jesus Christ! Amen. \n  \nJohn 2:12; Matthew 13:53\, 12:46-50; Luke 11:27-28; John 19:26-27; Luke 1:46-56 \n  \n12 After this he went down to Capernaum\, with his mother and his brethren and his disciples; and there they stayed for a few days. \n  \nThe Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth \n53 And when Jesus had finished these parables\, he went away from there\, \n  \n46 While he was still speaking to the people\, behold\, his mother and his brethren stood outside\, asking to speak to him. 48 But he replied to the man who told him\, “Who is my mother\, and who are my brethren?” 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples\, he said\, “Here are my mother and my brethren! 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother\, and sister\, and mother.” \n  \nTrue Blessedness \n  \n27 As he said this\, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him\, “Blessed is the womb that bore you\, and the breasts that you sucked!” 28 But he said\, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” \n  \n26 When Jesus saw his mother\, and the disciple whom he loved standing near\, he said to his mother\, “Woman\, behold\, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple\, “Behold\, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. \n  \n46 And Mary said\, “My soul magnifies the Lord\, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior\, 48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold\, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me\, and holy is his name.50 And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation.51 He has shown strength with his arm\, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts\, 52 he has put down the mighty from their thrones\, and exalted those of low degree; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things\, and the rich he has sent empty away. 54 He has helped his servant Israel\, in remembrance of his mercy\, 55 as he spoke to our fathers\, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever.” 56 And Mary remained with her about three months\, and returned to her home.

SUMMARY:The Feast of the Nativity of the Lord
DESCRIPTION:The Feast of the Nativity of the Lord – December 25 \n  \nIsaiah 7:10-16; 9:1-3\, 6-7 \n  \nThe Sign of Immanuel \n  \n10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz\, 11 “Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” 12 But Ahaz said\, “I will not ask\, and I will not put the Lordto the test.” 13 And he said\, “Hear then\, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men\, that you weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold\, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son\, and shall call his name Immanu-el.15 He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16 For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good\, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted. \n  \nThe Righteous Reign \nBut there will be no gloom for her that was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali\, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea\, the land beyond the Jordan\, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness\, on them has light shined.3 You have multiplied the nation\, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest\, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. \n  \n6 For to us a child is born\, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder\, and his name will be called “Wonderful Counselor\, Mighty God\, Everlasting Father\, Prince of Peace.” 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end\, upon the throne of David\, and over his kingdom\, to establish it\, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and for evermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. \n  \n  \nMicah 4:1-3; 5:2-5\, 8-9 \n  \nIt shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord \nshall be established as the highest of the mountains\, and shall be raised up above the hills; \nand peoples shall flow to it\, 2 and many nations shall come\, and say: “Come\, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord\, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law\, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 3 He shall judge between many peoples\, and shall decide for strong nations afar off; \nand they shall beat their swords into plowshares\, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation\, neither shall they learn war any more; \n  \n2 But you\, O Bethlehem Ephrathah\, who are little to be among the clans of Judah\, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel\, whose origin is from of old\, from ancient days. 3 Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who has labor pains has brought forth; then the rest of his brethren shall return to the sons of Israel. 4 And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord\, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall dwell secure\, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth.5 And this shall be peace\, when the Assyrian comes into our land and treads upon our soil\, that we will raise against him seven shepherds and eight princes of men; \n  \n8 And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the nations\, in the midst of many peoples\, like a lion among the beasts of the forest\, like a young lion among the flocks of sheep\, which\, when it goes through\, treads down and tears in pieces\, and there is none to deliver. 9 Your hand shall be lifted up over your adversaries\, and all your enemies shall be cut off. \n  \nGalatians 3:15-4:6 \nThe Promise to Abraham \nTo give a human example\, brethren: no one annuls even a man’s will\, or adds to it\, once it has been ratified. 16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say\, “And to offsprings\,” referring to many; but\, referring to one\, “And to your offspring\,” which is Christ. 17 This is what I mean: the law\, which came four hundred and thirty years afterward\, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God\, so as to make the promise void. 18 For if the inheritance is by the law\, it is no longer by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise. \nThe Purpose of the Law \n19 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions\, till the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made; and it was ordained by angels through an intermediary. 20 Now an intermediary implies more than one; but God is one. 21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not; for if a law had been given which could make alive\, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 22 But the Scripture consigned all things to sin\, that what was promised to faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. 23 Now before faith came\, we were confined under the law\, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. 24 So that the law was our custodian until Christ came\, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come\, we are no longer under a custodian; 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God\, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek\, there is neither slave nor free\, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s\, then you are Abraham’s offspring\, heirs according to promise. I mean that the heir\, as long as he is a child\, is no better than a slave\, though he is the owner of all the estate; 2 but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. 3 So with us; when we were children\, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe. 4 But when the time had fully come\, God sent forth his Son\, born of woman\, born under the law\, 5 to redeem those who were under the law\, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons\, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts\, crying\, “Abba! Father!” \n  \nLuke 2:1-20 \n  \nIn those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. 2 This was the first enrollment\, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be enrolled\, each to his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee\, from the city of Nazareth\, to Judea\, to the city of David\, which is called Bethlehem\, because he was of the house and lineage of David\, 5 to be enrolled with Mary his betrothed\, who was with child. 6 And while they were there\, the time came for her to be delivered. 7 And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths\, and laid him in a manger\, because there was no place for them in the inn. \nThe Shepherds and the Angels \n8 And in that region there were shepherds out in the field\, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them\, and the glory of the Lord shone around them\, and they were filled with fear. 10 And the angel said to them\, “Be not afraid; for behold\, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; 11 for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior\, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying\, 14 “Glory to God in the highest\, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased.” 15 When the angels went away from them into heaven\, the shepherds said to one another\, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened\, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste\, and found Mary and Joseph\, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child; 18 and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary kept all these things\, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned\, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen\, as it had been told them. \n

SUMMARY:4th of Subara/Advent
DESCRIPTION:4th of Subara/Adven \n  \nGenesis 24:50-61 \n  \n50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered\, “The thing comes from the Lord; we cannot speak to you bad or good. 51 Behold\, Rebekah is before you\, take her and go\, and let her be the wife of your master’s son\, as the Lord has spoken.” 52 When Abraham’s servant heard their words\, he bowed himself to the earth before the Lord. 53 And the servant brought forth jewelry of silver and of gold\, and raiment\, and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave to her brother and to her mother costly ornaments. 54 And he and the men who were with him ate and drank\, and they spent the night there. When they arose in the morning\, he said\, “Send me back to my master.” 55 Her brother and her mother said\, “Let the maiden remain with us a while\, at least ten days; after that she may go.” 56 But he said to them\, “Do not delay me\, since the Lordhas prospered my way; let me go that I may go to my master.” 57 They said\, “We will call the maiden\, and ask her.” 58 And they called Rebekah\, and said to her\, “Will you go with this man?” She said\, “I will go.” 59 So they sent away Rebekah their sister and her nurse\, and Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah\, and said to her\, “Our sister\, be the mother of thousands of ten thousands; and may your descendants possess the gate of those who hate them!” 61 Then Rebekah and her maids arose\, and rode upon the camels and followed the man; thus the servant took Rebekah\, and went his way. \n  \n1Samuel 1:1-18 \n  \nThere was a certain man of Ramathaimzophim of the hill country of Ephraim\, whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham\, son of Elihu\, son of Tohu\, son of Zuph\, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah\, and the name of the other Peninnah. And Peninnah had children\, but Hannah had no children. 3 Now this man used to go up year by year from his city to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh\, where the two sons of Eli\, Hophni and Phinehas\, were priests of the Lord. 4 On the day when Elkanah sacrificed\, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters; 5 and\, although he loved Hannah\, he would give Hannah only one portion\, because the Lord had closed her womb. 6 And her rival used to provoke her sorely\, to irritate her\, because the Lord had closed her womb. 7 So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the Lord\, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. 8 And Elkanah\, her husband\, said to her\, “Hannah\, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?” 9 After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh\, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. 10 She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord\, and wept bitterly. 11 And she vowed a vow and said\, “O Lord of hosts\, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your maidservant\, and remember me\, and not forget your maidservant\, but will give to your maidservant a son\, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life\, and no razor shall touch his head.” 12 As she continued praying before the Lord\, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved\, and her voice was not heard; therefore Eli took her to be a drunken woman. 14 And Eli said to her\, “How long will you be drunken? Put away your wine from you.” 15 But Hannah answered\, “No\, my lord\, I am a woman sorely troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink\, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. 16 Do not regard your maidservant as a base woman\, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.” 17 Then Eli answered\, “Go in peace\, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have made to him.” 18 And she said\, “Let your maidservant find favor in your eyes.” Then the woman went her way and ate\, and her countenance was no longer sad. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nEphesians 5:1-14 \n  \nTherefore be imitators of God\, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love\, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us\, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. \nRenounce Pagan Ways \n3 But immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you\, as is fitting among saints. 4 Let there be no filthiness\, nor silly talk\, nor levity\, which are not fitting; but instead let there be thanksgiving. 5 Be sure of this\, that no immoral or impure man\, or one who is covetous (that is\, an idolater)\, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words\, for it is because of these things that the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not associate with them\, 8 for once you were darkness\, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true)\, 10 and try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness\, but instead expose them. 12 For it is a shame even to speak of the things that they do in secret; 13 but when anything is exposed by the light it becomes visible\, for anything that becomes visible is light. 14 Therefore it is said\, “Awake\, O sleeper\, and arise from the dead\, and Christ shall give you light.” \n  \n  \nMatthew 1:18-25 \n  \nThe Birth of Jesus Christ \n18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph\, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; 19 and her husband Joseph\, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame\, resolved to send her away quietly. 20 But as he considered this\, behold\, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream\, saying\, “Joseph\, son of David\, do not fear to take Mary your wife\, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; 21 she will bear a son\, and you shall call his name Jesus\, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold\, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son\, and his name shall be called Emmanuel.” (which means\, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep\, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife\, 25 but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus.
