SUMMARY:4th Sunday of the Apostles
DESCRIPTION:Deuteronomy 1:16-33 \n16 And I charged your judges at that time\, ‘Hear the cases between your brethren\, and judge righteously between a man and his brother or the alien that is with him. 17 You shall not be partial in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike; you shall not be afraid of the face of man\, for the judgment is God’s; and the case that is too hard for you\, you shall bring to me\, and I will hear it.’ 18 And I commanded you at that time all the things that you should do. \nIsrael’s Refusal to Enter the Land \n19 “And we set out from Horeb\, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw\, on the way to the hill country of the Amorites\, as the Lord our God commanded us; and we came to Kadeshbarnea. 20 And I said to you\, ‘You have come to the hill country of the Amorites\, which the Lord our God gives us. 21 Behold\, the Lord your God has set the land before you; go up\, take possession\, as the Lord\, the God of your fathers\, has told you; do not fear or be dismayed.’ 22 Then all of you came near me\, and said\, ‘Let us send men before us\, that they may explore the land for us\, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up and the cities into which we shall come.’ 23 The thing seemed good to me\, and I took twelve men of you\, one man for each tribe; 24 and they turned and went up into the hill country\, and came to the Valley of Eshcol and spied it out. 25 And they took in their hands some of the fruit of the land and brought it down to us\, and brought us word again\, and said\, ‘It is a good land which the Lord our God gives us.’ \n26 “Yet you would not go up\, but rebelled against the command of the Lord your God; 27 and you murmured in your tents\, and said\, ‘Because the Lord hated us he has brought us forth out of the land of Egypt\, to give us into the hand of the Amorites\, to destroy us. 28 Where are we going up? Our brethren have made our hearts melt\, saying\, “The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.” ’ 29 Then I said to you\, ‘Do not be in dread or afraid of them. 30 The Lord your God who goes before you will himself fight for you\, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes\, 31 and in the wilderness\, where you have seen how the Lord your God bore you\, as a man bears his son\, in all the way that you went until you came to this place.’ 32 Yet in spite of this word you did not believe the Lord your God\, 33 who went before you in the way to seek you out a place to pitch your tents\, in fire by night\, to show you by what way you should go\, and in the cloud by day. \n  \nIsaiah 1:10-20 \n10 Hear the word of the Lord\, \nyou rulers of Sodom! \nGive ear to the teaching of our God\, \nyou people of Gomorrah! \n11 “What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? \nsays the Lord; \nI have had enough of burnt offerings of rams \nand the fat of fed beasts; \nI do not delight in the blood of bulls\, \nor of lambs\, or of he-goats. \n12 “When you come to appear before me\, \nwho requires of you \nthis trampling of my courts? \n13 Bring no more vain offerings; \nincense is an abomination to me. \nNew moon and sabbath and the calling of assemblies— \nI cannot endure iniquity and solemn assembly. \n14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts \nmy soul hates; \nthey have become a burden to me\, \nI am weary of bearing them. \n15 When you spread forth your hands\, \nI will hide my eyes from you; \neven though you make many prayers\, \nI will not listen; \nyour hands are full of blood. \n16 Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; \nremove the evil of your doings \nfrom before my eyes; \ncease to do evil\, \n17    learn to do good; \nseek justice\, \ncorrect oppression; \ndefend the fatherless\, \nplead for the widow. \n18 “Come now\, let us reason together\, \nsays the Lord: \nthough your sins are like scarlet\, \nthey shall be as white as snow; \nthough they are red like crimson\, \nthey shall become like wool. \n19 If you are willing and obedient\, \nyou shall eat the good of the land; \n20 but if you refuse and rebel\, \nyou shall be devoured by the sword; \nfor the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” \n  \n1Corinthians 9:13-27 \n13 Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple\, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings? 14 In the same way\, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel. \n15 But I have made no use of any of these rights\, nor am I writing this to secure any such provision. For I would rather die than have any one deprive me of my ground for boasting. 16 For if I preach the gospel\, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this of my own will\, I have a reward; but if not of my own will\, I am entrusted with a commission. 18 What then is my reward? Just this: that in my preaching I may make the gospel free of charge\, not making full use of my right in the gospel. \nThe Responsibilities of the Apostle \n19 For though I am free from all men\, I have made myself a slave to all\, that I might win the more. 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew\, in order to win Jews; to those under the law I became as one under the law—though not being myself under the law—that I might win those under the law. 21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law—not being without law toward God but under the law of Christ—that I might win those outside the law. 22 To the weak I became weak\, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men\, that I might by all means save some. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel\, that I may share in its blessings. \n24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete\, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath\, but we an imperishable. 26 Well\, I do not run aimlessly\, I do not box as one beating the air; 27 but I pommel my body and subdue it\, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. \n  \nLuke 6:12-46 \nJesus Chooses the Twelve Disciples \n12 In these days he went out to the hills to pray; and all night he continued in prayer to God. 13 And when it was day\, he called his disciples\, and chose from them twelve\, whom he named apostles; 14 Simon\, whom he named Peter\, and Andrew his brother\, and James and John\, and Philip\, and Bartholomew\, 15 and Matthew\, and Thomas\, and James the son of Alphaeus\, and Simon who was called the Zealot\, 16 and Judas the son of James\, and Judas Iscariot\, who became a traitor. \nJesus Teaches and Heals \n17 And he came down with them and stood on a level place\, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon\, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; 18 and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd sought to touch him\, for power came forth from him and healed them all. \nBlessings and Woes \n20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples\, and said: \n“Blessed are you poor\, for yours is the kingdom of God. \n21 “Blessed are you that hunger now\, for you shall be satisfied. \n“Blessed are you that weep now\, for you shall laugh. \n22 “Blessed are you when men hate you\, and when they exclude you and revile you\, and cast out your name as evil\, on account of the Son of man! 23 Rejoice in that day\, and leap for joy\, for behold\, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. \n24 “But woe to you that are rich\, for you have received your consolation. \n25 “Woe to you that are full now\, for you shall hunger. \n“Woe to you that laugh now\, for you shall mourn and weep. \n26 “Woe to you\, when all men speak well of you\, for so their fathers did to the false prophets. \nLove for Enemies \n27 “But I say to you that hear\, Love your enemies\, do good to those who hate you\, 28 bless those who curse you\, pray for those who abuse you. 29 To him who strikes you on the cheek\, offer the other also; and from him who takes away your cloak do not withhold your coat as well. 30 Give to every one who begs from you; and of him who takes away your goods do not ask them again. 31 And as you wish that men would do to you\, do so to them. \n32“If you love those who love you\, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you\, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive\, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners\, to receive as much again. 35 But love your enemies\, and do good\, and lend\, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great\, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. 36 Be merciful\, even as your Father is merciful. \nJudging Others \n37 “Judge not\, and you will not be judged; condemn not\, and you will not be condemned; forgive\, and you will be forgiven; 38 give\, and it will be given to you; good measure\, pressed down\, shaken together\, running over\, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back.” \n39 He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 A disciple is not above his teacher\, but every one when he is fully taught will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye\, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 Or how can you say to your brother\, ‘Brother\, let me take out the speck that is in your eye\,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite\, first take the log out of your own eye\, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye. \nA Tree and Its Fruit \n43 “For no good tree bears bad fruit\, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; 44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorns\, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 The good man out of the good treasure of his heart produces good\, and the evil man out of his evil treasure produces evil; for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. \nHearers and Doers \n46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord\, Lord\,’ and not do what I tell you?

SUMMARY:Memorial of the Sacred Heart – 3rd Friday of the Apostles
DESCRIPTION:The Law – From 4th Wednesday of Lent \nGenesis 13:8-18 \n8 Then Abram said to Lot\, “Let there be no strife between you and me\, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen; for we are kinsmen. 9 Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand\, then I will go to the right; or if you take the right hand\, then I will go to the left.” 10 And Lot lifted up his eyes\, and saw that the Jordan valley was well watered everywhere like the garden of the Lord\, like the land of Egypt\, in the direction of Zoar; this was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. 11 So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan valley\, and Lot journeyed east; thus they separated from each other. 12 Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan\, while Lot dwelt among the cities of the valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom. 13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked\, great sinners against the Lord. \n14 The Lord said to Abram\, after Lot had separated from him\, “Lift up your eyes\, and look from the place where you are\, northward and southward and eastward and westward; 15for all the land which you see I will give to you and to your descendants for ever. 16 I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if one can count the dust of the earth\, your descendants also can be counted. 17 Arise\, walk through the length and the breadth of the land\, for I will give it to you.” 18 So Abram moved his tent\, and came and dwelt by the Oaks of Mamre\, which are at Hebron; and there he built an altar to the Lord. \n  \nThe Prophets – From 4th Wednesday of Lent \nJoshua 8:18-29 \n18 Then the Lord said to Joshua\, “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai; for I will give it into your hand.” And Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city. 19 And the ambush rose quickly out of their place\, and as soon as he had stretched out his hand\, they ran and entered the city and took it; and they made haste to set the city on fire. 20 So when the men of Ai looked back\, behold\, the smoke of the city went up to heaven; and they had no power to flee this way or that\, for the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers. 21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city\, and that the smoke of the city went up\, then they turned back and struck the men of Ai. 22 And the others came forth from the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel\, some on this side\, and some on that side; and Israel struck them\, until there was left none that survived or escaped. 23 But the king of Ai they took alive\, and brought him to Joshua. \n24 When Israel had finished slaughtering all the inhabitants of Ai in the open wilderness where they pursued them\, and all of them to the very last had fallen by the edge of the sword\, all Israel returned to Ai\, and struck it with the edge of the sword. 25 And all who fell that day\, both men and women\, were twelve thousand\, all the people of Ai. 26 For Joshua did not draw back his hand\, with which he stretched out the javelin\, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai. 27 Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took as their booty\, according to the word of the Lord which he commanded Joshua. 28 So Joshua burned Ai\, and made it for ever a heap of ruins\, as it is to this day. 29 And he hanged the king of Ai on a tree until evening; and at the going down of the sun Joshua commanded\, and they took his body down from the tree\, and cast it at the entrance of the gate of the city\, and raised over it a great heap of stones\, which stands there to this day. \n  \nThe Apostle – From 4th Wednesday of Lent \nRomans 9:30-10:17 \nIsrael’s Lack of Faith \n30 What shall we say\, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it\, that is\, righteousness through faith; 31 but that Israel who pursued the righteousness which is based on law did not succeed in fulfilling that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it through faith\, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone\, 33 as it is written\, \n“Behold\, I am laying in Zion a stone that will make men stumble\, \na rock that will make them fall; \nand he who believes in him will not be put to shame.” \n10 Brethren\, my heart’s desire and prayer to \nGod for them is that they may be saved. 2 I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God\, but it is not enlightened. 3 For\, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God\, and seeking to establish their own\, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. 4 For Christ is the end of the law\, that every one who has faith may be justified. \nSalvation Is for Believers in Christ \n5 Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on the law shall live by it. 6 But the righteousness based on faith says\, Do not say in your heart\, “Who will ascend into heaven?” (that is\, to bring Christ down) 7 or “Who will descend into the abyss?” (that is\, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? The word is near you\, on your lips and in your heart (that is\, the word of faith which we preach); 9 because\, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead\, you will be saved. 10 For man believes with his heart and so is justified\, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved. 11 The Scripture says\, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and bestows his riches upon all who call upon him. 13 For\, “every one who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.” \n14 But how are men to call upon him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher? 15 And how can men preach unless they are sent? As it is written\, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach good news!” 16 But they have not all heeded the gospel; for Isaiah says\, “Lord\, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from what is heard\, and what is heard comes by the preaching of Christ. \n  \nMatthew 11:25-30; John 19:30-37 \nJesus Thanks His Father \n25 At that time Jesus declared\, “I thank you\, Father\, Lord of heaven and earth\, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to infants; 26 yes\, Father\, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father\, and no one knows the Father except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me\, all who labor and are heavy laden\, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you\, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart\, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy\, and my burden is light.” \n30 When Jesus had received the vinegar\, he said\, “It is finished”; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. \nJesus’ Side Is Pierced \n31 Since it was the day of Preparation\, in order to prevent the bodies from remaining on the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath was a high day)\, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken\, and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first\, and of the other who had been crucified with him; 33 but when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead\, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear\, and at once there came out blood and water. 35 He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true\, and he knows that he tells the truth—that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled\, “Not a bone of him shall be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says\, “They shall look on him whom they have pierced.”

SUMMARY:3rd Sunday of the Apostles
DESCRIPTION:Deuteronomy 1:3-17 \n3 And in the fortieth year\, on the first day of the eleventh month\, Moses spoke to the sons of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him in commandment to them\, 4 after he had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites\, who lived in Heshbon\, and Og the king of Bashan\, who lived in Ashtaroth and in Edrei. 5 Beyond the Jordan\, in the land of Moab\, Moses undertook to explain this law\, saying\, 6 “The Lord our God said to us in Horeb\, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain; 7 turn and take your journey\, and go to the hill country of the Amorites\, and to all their neighbors in the Arabah\, in the hill country and in the lowland\, and in the Negeb\, and by the seacoast\, the land of the Canaanites\, and Lebanon\, as far as the great river\, the river Euphrates. 8 Behold\, I have set the land before you; go in and take possession of the land which the Lord swore to your fathers\, to Abraham\, to Isaac\, and to Jacob\, to give to them and to their descendants after them.’ \nAppointment of Heads of the Tribes \n9 “At that time I said to you\, ‘I am not able alone to bear you; 10 the Lord your God has multiplied you\, and behold\, you are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude. 11 May the Lord\, the God of your fathers\, make you a thousand times as many as you are\, and bless you\, as he has promised you! 12 How can I bear alone the weight and burden of you and your strife? 13 Choose wise\, understanding\, and experienced men\, according to your tribes\, and I will appoint them as your heads.’ 14 And you answered me\, ‘The thing that you have spoken is good for us to do.’ 15 So I took the heads of your tribes\, wise and experienced men\, and set them as heads over you\, commanders of thousands\, commanders of hundreds\, commanders of fifties\, commanders of tens\, and officers\, throughout your tribes. 16 And I charged your judges at that time\, ‘Hear the cases between your brethren\, and judge righteously between a man and his brother or the alien that is with him. 17 You shall not be partial in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike; you shall not be afraid of the face of man\, for the judgment is God’s; and the case that is too hard for you\, you shall bring to me\, and I will hear it.’ \n  \nIsaiah 1:1-9 \nThe Sinfulness of Judah \n1 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz\, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah\, Jotham\, Ahaz\, and Hezekiah\, kings of Judah. \n2 Hear\, O heavens\, and give ear\, O earth; \nfor the Lord has spoken: \n“Sons have I reared and brought up\, \nbut they have rebelled against me. \n3 The ox knows its owner\, \nand the donkey its master’s crib; \nbut Israel does not know\, \nmy people does not understand.” \n4 Ah\, sinful nation\, \na people laden with iniquity\, \noffspring of evildoers\, \nsons who deal corruptly! \nThey have forsaken the Lord\, \nthey have despised the Holy One of Israel\, \nthey are utterly estranged. \n5 Why will you still be struck down\, \nthat you continue to rebel? \nThe whole head is sick\, \nand the whole heart faint. \n6 From the sole of the foot even to the head\, \nthere is no soundness in it\, \nbut bruises and sores \nand bleeding wounds; \nthey are not pressed out\, or bound up\, \nor softened with oil. \n7 Your country lies desolate\, \nyour cities are burned with fire; \nin your very presence \nstrangers devour your land; \nit is desolate\, as overthrown by strangers. \n8 And the daughter of Zion is left like a booth in a vineyard\, \nlike a lodge in a cucumber field\, \nlike a besieged city. \n9 If the Lord of hosts \nhad not left us a few survivors\, \nwe should have been like Sodom\, \nand become like Gomorrah. \n  \n1Corinthians 7:1-7 \nConcerning Marriage \n1 Now concerning the matters about which you wrote. It is well for a man not to touch a woman. 2 But because of the temptation to immorality\, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. 3 The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights\, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 For the wife does not rule over her own body\, but the husband does; likewise the husband does not rule over his own body\, but the wife does. 5 Do not refuse one another except perhaps by agreement for a season\, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again\, lest Satan tempt you through lack of self-control. 6 I say this by way of concession\, not of command. 7 I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own special gift from God\, one of one kind and one of another. \n  \nLuke 10:23-42 \n23 Then turning to the disciples he said privately\, “Blessed are the eyes which see what you see! 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see\, and did not see it\, and to hear what you hear\, and did not hear it.” \nThe Parable of the Good Samaritan \n25 And behold\, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test\, saying\, “Teacher\, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him\, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?” 27 And he answered\, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart\, and with all your soul\, and with all your strength\, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him\, “You have answered right; do this\, and you will live.” \n29 But he\, desiring to justify himself\, said to Jesus\, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied\, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho\, and he fell among robbers\, who stripped him and beat him\, and departed\, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite\, when he came to the place and saw him\, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan\, as he journeyed\, came to where he was; and when he saw him\, he had compassion\, 34 and went to him and bound up his wounds\, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn\, and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper\, saying\, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend\, I will repay you when I come back.’ 36 Which of these three\, do you think\, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37 He said\, “The one who showed mercy on him.” And Jesus said to him\, “Go and do likewise.” \nJesus Visits Martha and Mary \n38 Now as they went on their way\, he entered a village; and a woman named Martha received him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary\, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said\, “Lord\, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her\, “Martha\, Martha\, you are anxious and troubled about many things; 42 one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion\, which shall not be taken away from her.”

DESCRIPTION:Genesis 14:1-20 \nLot’s Captivity and Rescue \n14 In the days of Amraphel king of Shinar\, Arioch king of Ellasar\, Ched″-or-laomer king of Elam\, and Tidal king of Goiim\, 2 these kings made war with Bera king of Sodom\, Birsha king of Gomorrah\, Shinab king of Admah\, Shemeber king of Zeboiim\, and the king of Bela (that is\, Zoar). 3 And all these joined forces in the Valley of Siddim (that is\, the Salt Sea). 4 Twelve years they had served Ched″-or-laomer\, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled. 5 In the fourteenth year Ched″-or-laomer and the kings who were with him came and subdued the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim\, the Zuzim in Ham\, the Emim in Shaveh-kir″iathaim\, 6 and the Horites in their Mount Seir as far as El-paran on the border of the wilderness; 7 then they turned back and came to Enmishpat (that is\, Kadesh)\, and subdued all the country of the Amalekites\, and also the Amorites who dwelt in Hazazontamar. 8 Then the king of Sodom\, the king of Gomorrah\, the king of Admah\, the king of Zeboiim\, and the king of Bela (that is\, Zoar) went out\, and they joined battle in the Valley of Siddim 9 with Ched″-or-laomer king of Elam\, Tidal king of Goiim\, Amraphel king of Shinar\, and Arioch king of Ellasar\, four kings against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of bitumen pits; and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled\, some fell into them\, and the rest fled to the mountain. 11 So the enemy took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah\, and all their provisions\, and went their way; 12 they also took Lot\, the son of Abram’s brother\, who dwelt in Sodom\, and his goods\, and departed. \n13 Then one who had escaped came\, and told Abram the Hebrew\, who was living by the Oaks of Mamre the Amorite\, brother of Eshcol and of Aner; these were allies of Abram. 14 When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive\, he led forth his trained men\, born in his house\, three hundred and eighteen of them\, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15 And he divided his forces against them by night\, he and his servants\, and routed them and pursued them to Hobah\, north of Damascus. 16 Then he brought back all the goods\, and also brought back his kinsman Lot with his goods\, and the women and the people. \nMelchizedek Blesses Abram \n17 After his return from the defeat of Ched″-or-laomer and the kings who were with him\, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is\, the King’s Valley). 18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said\, \n“Blessed be Abram by God Most High\, \nmaker of heaven and earth; \n20 and blessed be God Most High\, \nwho has delivered your enemies into your hand!” \n  \nMalachi 1:6-11 \nCorruption of the Priesthood \n6 “A son honors his father\, and a servant his master. If then I am a father\, where is my honor? And if I am a master\, where is my fear? says the Lord of hosts to you\, O priests\, who despise my name. You say\, ‘How have we despised your name?’ 7 By offering polluted food upon my altar. And you say\, ‘How have we polluted it?’ By thinking that the Lord’stable may be despised. 8 When you offer blind animals in sacrifice\, is that no evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick\, is that no evil? Present that to your governor; will he be pleased with you or show you favor? says the Lordof hosts. 9 And now entreat the favor of God\, that he may be gracious to us. With such a gift from your hand\, will he show favor to any of you? says the Lord of hosts. 10 Oh\, that there were one among you who would shut the doors\, that you might not kindle fire upon my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you\, says the Lord of hosts\, and I will not accept an offering from your hand. 11 For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations\, and in every place incense is offered to my name\, and a pure offering; for my name is great among the nations\, says the Lord of hosts. \n  \n1Corinthians 10:15-17; 11:23-30 \n15 I speak as to sensible men; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing which we bless\, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break\, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread\, we who are many are one body\, for we all partake of the one bread. \nThe Institution of the Eucharist \n23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you\, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread\, 24 and when he had given thanks\, he broke it\, and said\, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also the chalice\, after supper\, saying\, “This chalice is the new covenant in my blood. Do this\, as often as you drink it\, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the chalice\, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. \nPartaking of the Eucharist Unworthily \n27 Whoever\, therefore\, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a man examine himself\, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill\, and some have died. \n  \nJohn 6:51-64         \n51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread\, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.” \n52 The Jews then disputed among themselves\, saying\, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them\, “Truly\, truly\, I say to you\, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood\, you have no life in you; 54 he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life\, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is food indeed\, and my blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me\, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me\, and I live because of the Father\, so he who eats me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread which came down from heaven\, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever.” 59 This he said in the synagogue\, as he taught at Capernaum. \nThe Words of Eternal Life \n60 Many of his disciples\, when they heard it\, said\, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus\, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at it\, said to them\, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending where he was before? 63 It is the Spirit that gives life\, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you that do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the first who those were that did not believe\, and who it was that would betray him.

SUMMARY:2nd Sunday of the Apostles
DESCRIPTION:Joel 2:15-26 \n15 Blow the trumpet in Zion; \nsanctify a fast; \ncall a solemn assembly; \n16 gather the people. \nSanctify the congregation; \nassemble the elders; \ngather the children\, \neven nursing infants. \nLet the bridegroom leave his room\, \nand the bride her chamber. \n17 Between the vestibule and the altar \nlet the priests\, the ministers of the Lord\, weep \nand say\, “Spare your people\, O Lord\, \nand make not your heritage a reproach\, \na byword among the nations. \nWhy should they say among the peoples\, \n‘Where is their God?’ ” \n18 Then the Lord became jealous for his land\, \nand had pity on his people. \n19 The Lord answered and said to his people\, \n“Behold\, I am sending to you \ngrain\, wine\, and oil\, \nand you will be satisfied; \nand I will no more make you \na reproach among the nations. \n20 “I will remove the northerner far from you\, \nand drive him into a parched and desolate land\, \nhis front into the eastern sea\, \nand his rear into the western sea; \nthe stench and foul smell of him will rise\, \nfor he has done great things. \n21 “Fear not\, O land; \nbe glad and rejoice\, \nfor the Lord has done great things! \n22 Fear not\, you beasts of the field\, \nfor the pastures of the wilderness are green; \nthe tree bears its fruit\, \nthe fig tree and vine give their full yield. \n23 “Be glad\, O sons of Zion\, \nand rejoice in the Lord\, your God; \nfor he has given the early rain for your vindication\, \nhe has poured down for you abundant rain\, \nthe early and the latter rain\, as before. \n24 “The threshing floors shall be full of grain\, \nthe vats shall overflow with wine and oil. \n25 I will restore to you the years \nwhich the swarming locust has eaten\, \nthe hopper\, the destroyer\, and the cutter\, \nmy great army\, which I sent among you. \n26 “You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied\, \nand praise the name of the Lord your God\, \nwho has dealt wondrously with you. \nAnd my people shall never again be put to shame. \n  \nActs of the Apostles 4:5-22 \n5 On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem\, 6 with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander\, and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7 And when they had set them in their midst\, they inquired\, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” 8 Then Peter\, filled with the Holy Spirit\, said to them\, “Rulers of the people and elders\, 9 if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a cripple\, by what means this man has been healed\, 10 be it known to you all\, and to all the people of Israel\, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth\, whom you crucified\, whom God raised from the dead\, by him this man is standing before you well. 11 This is the stone which was rejected by you builders\, but which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else\, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” \n13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John\, and perceived that they were uneducated\, common men\, they wondered; and they recognized that they had been with Jesus. 14 But seeing the man that had been healed standing beside them\, they had nothing to say in opposition. 15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council\, they conferred with one another\, 16 saying\, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is manifest to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem\, and we cannot deny it. 17 But in order that it may spread no further among the people\, let us warn them to speak no more to any one in this name.” 18 So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered them\, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God\, you must judge; 20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” 21 And when they had further threatened them\, they let them go\, finding no way to punish them\, because of the people; for all men praised God for what had happened. 22 For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old. \n  \n1Corinthians 5:6-6:11 \n6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens all the dough? 7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be new dough\, as you really are unleavened. For Christ\, our Paschal Lamb\, has been sacrificed. 8 Let us\, therefore\, celebrate the festival\, not with the old leaven\, the leaven of malice and evil\, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. \nImmorality and Judgment \n9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with immoral men; 10 not at all meaning the immoral of this world\, or the greedy and robbers\, or idolaters\, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But rather I wrote to you not to associate with any one who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of immorality or greed\, or is an idolater\, reviler\, drunkard\, or robber—not even to eat with such a one. 12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the Church whom you are to judge? 13 God judges those outside. “Drive out the wicked person from among you.” \nLawsuits among Believers \n6 When one of you has a grievance against a brother\, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints? 2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you\, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? 3 Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more\, matters pertaining to this life! 4 If then you have such cases\, why do you lay them before those who are least esteemed by the Church? 5 I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no man among you wise enough to decide between members of the brotherhood\, 6 but brother goes to law against brother\, and that before unbelievers? \n7 To have lawsuits at all with one another is defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded? 8 But you yourselves wrong and defraud\, and that even your own brethren. \n9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral\, nor idolaters\, nor adulterers\, nor homosexuals\, 10 nor thieves\, nor the greedy\, nor drunkards\, nor revilers\, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed\, you were sanctified\, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. \n  \nLuke 7:31-50 \n31 “To what then shall I compare the men of this generation\, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the market place and calling to one another\, \n‘We piped to you\, and you did not dance; \nwe wailed\, and you did not weep.’ \n33 For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine; and you say\, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of man has come eating and drinking; and you say\, ‘Behold\, a glutton and a drunkard\, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35 Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.” \nA Sinful Woman Forgiven \n36 One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him\, and he went into the Pharisee’s house\, and sat at table. 37 And behold\, a woman of the city\, who was a sinner\, when she learned that he was sitting at table in the Pharisee’s house\, brought an alabaster flask of ointment\, 38 and standing behind him at his feet\, weeping\, she began to wet his feet with her tears\, and wiped them with the hair of her head\, and kissed his feet\, and anointed them with the ointment. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it\, he said to himself\, “If this man were a prophet\, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him\, for she is a sinner.” 40 And Jesus answering said to him\, “Simon\, I have something to say to you.” And he answered\, “What is it\, Teacher?” 41 “A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii\, and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay\, he forgave them both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered\, “The one\, I suppose\, to whom he forgave more.” And he said to him\, “You have judged rightly.” 44 Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon\, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house\, you gave me no water for my feet\, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You gave me no kiss\, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil\, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Therefore I tell you\, her sins\, which are many\, are forgiven\, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little\, loves little.” 48 And he said to her\, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves\, “Who is this\, who even forgives sins?” 50 And he said to the woman\, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

SUMMARY:Golden Friday
DESCRIPTION:Isaiah 35:3-10 \nThe Lord Will Come to Save \n3 Strengthen the weak hands\, \nand make firm the feeble knees. \n4 Say to those who are of a fearful heart\, \n“Be strong\, fear not! \nBehold\, your God \nwill come with vengeance\, \nwith the recompense of God. \nHe will come and save you.” \n5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened\, \nand the ears of the deaf unstopped; \n6 then shall the lame man leap like a deer\, \nand the tongue of the mute sing for joy. \nFor waters shall break forth in the wilderness\, \nand streams in the desert; \n7 the burning sand shall become a pool\, \nand the thirsty ground springs of water; \nthe haunt of jackals shall become a swamp\, \nthe grass shall become reeds and rushes. \n8 And a highway shall be there\, \nand it shall be called the Holy Way; \nthe unclean shall not pass over it\, \nand fools shall not err therein. \n9 No lion shall be there\, \nnor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; \nthey shall not be found there\, \nbut the redeemed shall walk there. \n10 And the ransomed of the Lord shall return\, \nand come to Zion with singing; \neverlasting joy shall be upon their heads; \nthey shall obtain joy and gladness\, \nand sorrow and sighing shall flee away. \n  \nActs of the Apostles 3:1-26 \nPeter Heals a Lame Beggar \n1 Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer\, the ninth hour. 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried\, whom they laid daily at that gate of the temple which is called Beautiful to ask alms of those who entered the temple. 3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple\, he asked for alms. 4 And Peter directed his gaze at him\, with John\, and said\, “Look at us.” 5 And he fixed his attention upon them\, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said\, “I have no silver and gold\, but I give you what I have; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth\, rise and walk.” 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up; and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. 8 And leaping up he stood and walked and entered the temple with them\, walking and leaping and praising God. 9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God\, 10 and recognized him as the one who sat for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. \nPeter Addresses the People in Solomon’s Portico \n11 While he clung to Peter and John\, all the people ran together to them in the portico called Solomon’s\, astounded. 12 And when Peter saw it he addressed the people\, “Men of Israel\, why do you wonder at this\, or why do you stare at us\, as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk? 13 The God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob\, the God of our fathers\, glorified his servant Jesus\, whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate\, when he had decided to release him. 14 But you denied the Holy and Righteous One\, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you\, 15 and killed the Author of life\, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. 16 And his name\, by faith in his name\, has made this man strong whom you see and know; and the faith which is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all. \n17 “And now\, brethren\, I know that you acted in ignorance\, as did also your rulers. 18 But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets\, that his Christ should suffer\, he thus fulfilled. 19 Repent therefore\, and turn again\, that your sins may be blotted out\, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord\, 20 and that he may send the Christ appointed for you\, Jesus\, 21 whom heaven must receive until the time for establishing all that God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old. 22 Moses said\, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet from your brethren as he raised me up. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you. 23 And it shall be that every soul that does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.’ 24 And all the prophets who have spoken\, from Samuel and those who came afterwards\, also proclaimed these days. 25 You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God gave to your fathers\, saying to Abraham\, ‘And in your posterity shall all the families of the earth be blessed.’ 26 God\, having raised up his servant\, sent him to you first\, to bless you in turning every one of you from your wickedness.” \n  \n1Corinthians 12:28-13:13 \n28 And God has appointed in the Church first apostles\, second prophets\, third teachers\, then workers of miracles\, then healers\, helpers\, administrators\, speakers in various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts. \nAnd I will show you a still more excellent way. \nThe Way of Love \n13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels\, but have not love\, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers\, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge\, and if I have all faith\, so as to remove mountains\, but have not love\, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have\, and if I deliver my body to be burned\, but have not love\, I gain nothing. \n4 Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; 5 it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrong\, but rejoices in the right. 7 Love bears all things\, believes all things\, hopes all things\, endures all things. \n8 Love never ends; as for prophecies\, they will pass away; as for tongues\, they will cease; as for knowledge\, it will pass away. 9 For our knowledge is imperfect and our prophecy is imperfect; 10 but when the perfect comes\, the imperfect will pass away. 11 When I was a child\, I spoke like a child\, I thought like a child\, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man\, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly\, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully\, even as I have been fully understood. 13 So faith\, hope\, love abide\, these three; but the greatest of these is love. \n  \nLuke 7:1-23 \nJesus Heals a Centurion’s Slave \n1 After he had ended all his sayings in the hearing of the people he entered Capernaum. 2 Now a centurion had a slave who was dear to him\, who was sick and at the point of death. 3 When he heard of Jesus\, he sent to him elders of the Jews\, asking him to come and heal his slave. 4 And when they came to Jesus\, they begged him earnestly\, saying\, “He is worthy to have you do this for him\, 5 for he loves our nation\, and he built us our synagogue.” 6 And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house\, the centurion sent friends to him\, saying to him\, “Lord\, do not trouble yourself\, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; 7 therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word\, and let my servant be healed. 8 For I am a man set under authority\, with soldiers under me: and I say to one\, ‘Go\,’ and he goes; and to another\, ‘Come\,’ and he comes; and to my slave\, ‘Do this\,’ and he does it.” 9 When Jesus heard this he marveled at him\, and turned and said to the multitude that followed him\, “I tell you\, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” 10 And when those who had been sent returned to the house\, they found the slave well. \nJesus Raises a Widow’s Son at Nain \n11 Soon afterward he went to a city called Nain\, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. 12 As he drew near to the gate of the city\, behold\, a man who had died was being carried out\, the only son of his mother\, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. 13 And when the Lord saw her\, he had compassion on her and said to her\, “Do not weep.” 14 And he came and touched the bier\, and the bearers stood still. And he said\, “Young man\, I say to you\, arise.” 15 And the dead man sat up\, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. 16 Fear seized them all; and they glorified God\, saying\, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited his people!” 17 And this report concerning him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country. \nMessengers from John the Baptist \n18 The disciples of John told him of all these things. 19 And John\, calling to him two of his disciples\, sent them to the Lord\, saying\, “Are you he who is to come\, or shall we look for another?” 20 And when the men had come to him\, they said\, “John the Baptist has sent us to you\, saying\, ‘Are you he who is to come\, or shall we look for another?’ ” 21 In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits\, and on many that were blind he bestowed sight. 22 And he answered them\, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight\, the lame walk\, lepers are cleansed\, and the deaf hear\, the dead are raised up\, the poor have good news preached to them. 23 And blessed is he who takes no offense at me.”

SUMMARY:Pentecost
DESCRIPTION:Exodus 19:1-9; 20:18-21 \nThe Israelites Reach Mount Sinai \n1 On the third new moon after the sons of Israel had gone forth out of the land of Egypt\, on that day they came into the wilderness of Sinai. 2 And when they set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai\, they encamped in the wilderness; and there Israel encamped before the mountain. 3 And Moses went up to God\, and the Lord called to him out of the mountain\, saying\, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob\, and tell the sons of Israel: 4 You have seen what I did to the Egyptians\, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now therefore\, if you will obey my voice and keep my covenant\, you shall be my own possession among all peoples; for all the earth is mine\, 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.” \n7 So Moses came and called the elders of the people\, and set before them all these words which the Lord had commanded him. 8 And all the people answered together and said\, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord. 9 And the Lordsaid to Moses\, “Behold\, I am coming to you in a thick cloud\, that the people may hear when I speak with you\, and may also believe you for ever.” \n18 Now when all the people perceived the thunder and the lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking\, the people were afraid and trembled; and they stood afar off\, 19 and said to Moses\, “You speak to us\, and we will hear; but let not God speak to us\, lest we die.” 20 And Moses said to the people\, “Do not fear; for God has come to test you\, and that the fear of him may be before your eyes\, that you may not sin.” \n21 And the people stood afar off\, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was. \n  \n  \nActs of the Apostles 2:1-21 \nThe Coming of the Holy Spirit \n1 When the day of Pentecost had come\, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind\, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire\, distributed and resting on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues\, as the Spirit gave them utterance. \n5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews\, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together\, and they were bewildered\, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and wondered\, saying\, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear\, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia\, Judea and Cappadocia\, Pontus and Asia\, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia\, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene\, and visitors from Rome\, both Jews and proselytes\, 11 Cretans and Arabians\, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed\, saying to one another\, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocking said\, “They are filled with new wine.” \nPeter Addresses the Crowd \n14 But Peter\, standing with the Eleven\, lifted up his voice and addressed them\, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem\, let this be known to you\, and give ear to my words. 15 For these men are not drunk\, as you suppose\, since it is only the third hour of the day; 16 but this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: \n17 And in the last days it shall be\, God declares\, \nthat I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh\, \nand your sons and your daughters shall prophesy\, \nand your young men shall see visions\, \nand your old men shall dream dreams; \n18 yes\, and on my menservants and my maidservants in those days \nI will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. \n19 And I will show wonders in the heaven above \nand signs on the earth beneath\, \nblood\, and fire\, and vapor of smoke; \n20 the sun shall be turned into darkness \nand the moon into blood\, \nbefore the day of the Lord comes\, \nthe great and manifest day. \n21 And it shall be that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ \n  \n1Corinthians 12:1-27 \nSpiritual Gifts \n12 Now concerning spiritual gifts\, brethren\, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were heathen\, you were led astray to mute idols\, however you may have been moved. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus be cursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. \n4 Now there are varieties of gifts\, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service\, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of working\, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom\, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit\, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit\, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit\, 10 to another the working of miracles\, to another prophecy\, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits\, to another various kinds of tongues\, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit\, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. \nOne Body with Many Members \n12 For just as the body is one and has many members\, and all the members of the body\, though many\, are one body\, so it is with Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks\, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. \n14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say\, “Because I am not a hand\, I do not belong to the body\,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say\, “Because I am not an eye\, I do not belong to the body\,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye\, where would be the hearing? If the whole body were an ear\, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But as it is\, God arranged the organs in the body\, each one of them\, as he chose. 19 If all were a single organ\, where would the body be? 20 As it is\, there are many parts\, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand\, “I have no need of you\,” nor again the head to the feet\, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary\, the parts of the body which seem to be weaker are indispensable\,23 and those parts of the body which we think less honorable we invest with the greater honor\, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty\,24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body\, giving the greater honor to the inferior part\,25 that there may be no discord in the body\, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers\, all suffer together; if one member is honored\, all rejoice together. \n27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. \n  \nJohn 14:15-16\, 25-26; 15:26-16:15 \nThe Promise of the Holy Spirit \n15 “If you love me\, you will keep my commandments. 16And I will ask the Father\, and he will give you another Counselor\, to be with you for ever. \n25 “These things I have spoken to you\, while I am still with you. 26 But the Counselor\, the Holy Spirit\, whom the Father will send in my name\, he will teach you all things\, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. \n26 But when the Counselor comes\, whom I shall send to you from the Father\, even the Spirit of truth\, who proceeds from the Father\, he will bear witness to me; 27 and you also are witnesses\, because you have been with me from the beginning. \n16 “I have said all this to you to keep you from falling away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues; indeed\, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3 And they will do this because they have not known the Father\, nor me. 4 But I have said these things to you\, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you of them. \nThe Work of the Spirit \n“I did not say these things to you from the beginning\, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me\, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you\, sorrow has filled your hearts. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away\, for if I do not go away\, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go\, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes\, he will convince the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment: 9 of sin\, because they do not believe in me; 10 of righteousness\, because I go to the Father\, and you will see me no more; 11 of judgment\, because the ruler of this world is judged. \n12 “I have yet many things to say to you\, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes\, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority\, but whatever he hears he will speak\, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me\, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

SUMMARY:Sunday After the Ascension
DESCRIPTION:Isaiah 6:1-13 \nA Vision of the Lord in the Temple \n1 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne\, high and lifted up; and his train filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim; each had six wings: with two he covered his face\, and with two he covered his feet\, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said: \n“Holy\, holy\, holy is the Lord of hosts; \nthe whole earth is full of his glory.” \n4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called\, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips\, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King\, the Lord of hosts!” \n6 Then flew one of the seraphim to me\, having in his hand a burning coal which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth\, and said: “Behold\, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away\, and your sin forgiven.” 8 And I heard the voice of the Lord saying\, “Whom shall I send\, and who will go for us?” Then I said\, “Here am I! Send me.” 9 And he said\, “Go\, and say to this people: \n‘Hear and hear\, but do not understand; see and see\, but do not perceive.’ \n10 Make the heart of this people fat\, \nand their ears heavy\, \nand shut their eyes; \nlest they see with their eyes\, \nand hear with their ears\, \nand understand with their hearts\, \nand turn and be healed.” \n11 Then I said\, “How long\, O Lord?” \nAnd he said: \n“Until cities lie waste \nwithout inhabitant\, \nand houses without men\, \nand the land is utterly desolate\, \n12 and the Lord removes men far away\, \nand the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land. \n13 And though a tenth remain in it\, \nit will be burned again\, \nlike a terebinth or an oak\, \nwhose stump remains standing \nwhen it is felled.” \nThe holy seed is its stump. \n  \nActs of the Apostles 1:15-26 \n15 In those days Peter stood up among the brethren (the company of persons was in all about a hundred and twenty)\, and said\, 16 Brethren\, the Scripture had to be fulfilled\, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David\, concerning Judas who was guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For he was numbered among us\, and was allotted his share in this ministry. 18 (Now this man bought a field with the reward of his wickedness; and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem\, so that the field was called in their language Akeldama\, that is\, Field of Blood.) 20 For it is written in the book of Psalms\, \n‘Let his habitation become desolate\, \nand let there be no one to live in it’; \nand \n‘His office let another take.’ \n21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us\, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” 23 And they put forward two\, Joseph called Barsabbas\, who was surnamed Justus\, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said\, “Lord\, you know the hearts of all men\, show which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside\, to go to his own place.” 26 And they cast lots for them\, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was enrolled with the eleven apostles. \n  \nPhilippians 1:27-2:11 \n27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ\, so that whether I come and see you or am absent\, I may hear of you that you stand firm in one spirit\, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel\, 28 and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear omen to them of their destruction\, but of your salvation\, and that from God. 29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake\, 30 engaged in the same conflict which you saw and now hear to be mine. \nImitating Christ’s Humility \n1 So if there is any encouragement in Christ\, any incentive of love\, any participation in the Spirit\, any affection and sympathy\, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind\, having the same love\, being in full accord and of one mind. 3Do nothing from selfishness or conceit\, but in humility count others better than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests\, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves\, which was in Christ Jesus\, 6 who\, though he was in the form of God\, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped\, 7 but emptied himself\, taking the form of a servant\, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death\, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name\, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow\, in heaven and on earth and under the earth\, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord\, to the glory of God the Father. \n  \nMark 16:9-20 \nJesus Appears to Mary Magdalene \n9 Now when he rose early on the first day of the week\, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene\, from whom he had cast out seven demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with him\, as they mourned and wept. 11 But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her\, they would not believe it. \nJesus Appears to Two Disciples \n12 After this he appeared in another form to two of them\, as they were walking into the country. 13 And they went back and told the rest\, but they did not believe them. \nJesus Commissions the Disciples \n14 Afterward he appeared to the Eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart\, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. 15 And he said to them\, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents\, and if they drink any deadly thing\, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick\, and they will recover.” \nThe Ascension of Jesus \n19 So then the Lord Jesus\, after he had spoken to them\, was taken up into heaven\, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went forth and preached everywhere\, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen.

SUMMARY:Memorial of Mary\, Our Lady of the Harvest – May 15
DESCRIPTION:Exodus 15:11-21 \n11 “Who is like you\, O Lord\, among the gods? \nWho is like you\, majestic in holiness\, \nterrible in glorious deeds\, doing wonders? \n12 You stretched out your right hand\, \nthe earth swallowed them. \n13 “You have led in your merciful love the people whom you have redeemed\, \nyou have guided them by your strength to your holy abode. \n14 The peoples have heard\, they tremble; \npangs have seized on the inhabitants of Philistia. \n15 Now are the chiefs of Edom dismayed; \nthe leaders of Moab\, trembling seizes them; \nall the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away. \n16 Terror and dread fall upon them; \nbecause of the greatness of your arm\, they are as still as a stone\, \ntill your people\, O Lord\, pass by\, \ntill the people pass by whom you have purchased. \n17 You will bring them in\, and plant them on your own mountain\, \nthe place\, O Lord\, which you have made for your abode\, \nthe sanctuary\, O Lord\, which your hands have established. \n18 The Lord will reign for ever and ever.” \n19 For when the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea\, the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them; but the sons of Israel walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea. 20 Then Miriam\, the prophetess\, the sister of Aaron\, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and dancing. 21 And Miriam sang to them: \n“Sing to the Lord\, for he has triumphed gloriously; \nthe horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.” \n  \nActs of the Apostles 1:1-8 \nThe Promise of the Holy Spirit \n1 In the first book\, O Theophilus\, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach\, 2 until the day when he was taken up\, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs\, appearing to them during forty days\, and speaking of the kingdom of God. 4  And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem\, but to wait for the promise of the Father\, which\, he said\, “you heard from me\, 5 for John baptized with water\, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” \nThe Ascension of Jesus \n6 So when they had come together\, they asked him\, “Lord\, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them\, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8  But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.” \n  \nApostle – From the Feast of the Virgin Mary \nRomans 16:1-27 \nPersonal Greetings \n16 I commend to you our sister Phoebe\, a deaconess of the Church at Cenchreae\, 2 that you may receive her in the Lord as befits the saints\, and help her in whatever she may require from you\, for she has been a helper of many and of myself as well. \n3 Greet Prisca and Aquila\, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus\, 4 who risked their necks for my life\, to whom not only I but also all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks; 5 greet also the church in their house. Greet my beloved Epaenetus\, who was the first convert in Asia for Christ. 6 Greet Mary\, who has worked hard among you. 7 Greet Andronicus and Junias\, my kinsmen and my fellow prisoners; they are men of note among the apostles\, and they were in Christ before me. 8 Greet Ampliatus\, my beloved in the Lord. 9 Greet Urbanus\, our fellow worker in Christ\, and my beloved Stachys. 10 Greet Apelles\, who is approved in Christ. Greet those who belong to the family of Aristobulus. 11 Greet my kinsman Herodion. Greet those in the Lord who belong to the family of Narcissus. 12 Greet those workers in the Lord\, Tryphaena and Tryphosa. Greet the beloved Persis\, who has worked hard in the Lord. 13 Greet Rufus\, eminent in the Lord\, also his mother and mine. 14 Greet Asyncritus\, Phlegon\, Hermes\, Patrobas\, Hermas\, and the brethren who are with them. 15 Greet Philologus\, Julia\, Nereus and his sister\, and Olympas\, and all the saints who are with them. 16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you. \nFinal Instructions \n17 I appeal to you\, brethren\, to take note of those who create dissensions and difficulties\, in opposition to the doctrine which you have been taught; avoid them. 18 For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ\, but their own appetites\, and by fair and flattering words they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded. 19 For while your obedience is known to all\, so that I rejoice over you\, I would have you wise as to what is good and guileless as to what is evil; 20 then the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. \n21 Timothy\, my fellow worker\, greets you; so do Lucius and Jason and Sosipater\, my kinsmen. \n22 I Tertius\, the writer of this letter\, greet you in the Lord. \n23 Gaius\, who is host to me and to the whole Church\, greets you. Erastus\, the city treasurer\, and our brother Quartus\, greet you. \nFinal Doxology \n25 Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ\, according to the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret for long ages 26 but is now disclosed and through the prophetic writings is made known to all nations\, according to the command of the eternal God\, to bring about the obedience of faith—27 to the only wise God be glory for evermore through Jesus Christ! Amen. \n  \nJohn 2:12; Matthew 13:53-57\, 12:46-50; Luke 11:27-28 \n12 After this he went down to Capernaum\, with his mother and his brethren and his disciples; and there they stayed for a few days. \nThe Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth \n53 And when Jesus had finished these parables\, he went away from there\, 54 and coming to his own country he taught them in their synagogue\, so that they were astonished\, and said\, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brethren James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all this?” 57 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them\, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” \n46 While he was still speaking to the people\, behold\, his mother and his brethren stood outside\, asking to speak to him. 48 But he replied to the man who told him\, “Who is my mother\, and who are my brethren?” 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples\, he said\, “Here are my mother and my brethren! 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother\, and sister\, and mother.” \nTrue Blessedness \n27 As he said this\, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him\, “Blessed is the womb that bore you\, and the breasts that you sucked!” 28 But he said\, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

SUMMARY:The Feast of the Ascension of our Lord
DESCRIPTION:2Kings 2:1-15 \nElijah Is Taken Up to Heaven \n2 Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind\, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2 And Elijah said to Elisha\, “Tarry here\, I beg you; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said\, “As the Lord lives\, and as you yourself live\, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. 3 And the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha\, and said to him\, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he said\, “Yes\, I know it; hold your peace.” \n4 Elijah said to him\, “Elisha\, tarry here\, I beg you; for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.” But he said\, “As the Lord lives\, and as you yourself live\, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho. 5 The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha\, and said to him\, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he answered\, “Yes\, I know it; hold your peace.” \n6 Then Elijah said to him\, “Tarry here\, I beg you; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said\, “As the Lordlives\, and as you yourself live\, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on. 7 Fifty men of the sons of the prophets also went\, and stood at some distance from them\, as they both were standing by the Jordan. 8 Then Elijah took his coat\, and rolled it up\, and struck the water\, and the water was parted to the one side and to the other\, till the two of them could go over on dry ground. \nElisha Succeeds Elijah \n9 When they had crossed\, Elijah said to Elisha\, “Ask what I shall do for you\, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said\, “I beg you\, let me inherit a double share of your spirit.” 10 And he said\, “You have asked a hard thing; yet\, if you see me as I am being taken from you\, it shall be so for you; but if you do not see me\, it shall not be so.” 11 And as they still went on and talked\, behold\, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12 And Elisha saw it and he cried\, “My father\, my father! the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more. \nThen he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. 13 And he took up the coat of Elijah that had fallen from him\, and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14 Then he took the coat of Elijah that had fallen from him\, and struck the water\, saying\, “Where is the Lord\, the God of Elijah?” And when he had struck the water\, the water was parted to the one side and to the other; and Elisha went over. \n15 Now when the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho saw him over against them\, they said\, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” And they came to meet him\, and bowed to the ground before him. \n  \nActs of the Apostles 1:1-14 \nThe Promise of the Holy Spirit \n1 In the first book\, O Theophilus\, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach\, 2 until the day when he was taken up\, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said this\, as they were looking on\, he was lifted up\, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went\, behold\, two men stood by them in white robes\, 11 and said\, “Men of Galilee\, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus\, who was taken up from you into heaven\, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” \nMatthias Chosen to Replace Judas \n12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet\, which is near Jerusalem\, a sabbath day’s journey away; 13 and when they had entered\, they went up to the upper room\, where they were staying\, Peter and John and James and Andrew\, Philip and Thomas\, Bartholomew and Matthew\, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. 14 All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer\, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus\, and with his brethren. \n  \n1Timothy 1:18-2:15 \n18 This charge I commit to you\, Timothy\, my son\, in accordance with the prophetic utterances which pointed to you\, that inspired by them you may wage the good warfare\, 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting conscience\, certain persons have made shipwreck of their faith\, 20 among them Hymenaeus and Alexander\, whom I have delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. \nInstructions concerning Prayer \n2 First of all\, then\, I urge that supplications\, prayers\, intercessions\, and thanksgivings be made for all men\, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions\, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life\, godly and respectful in every way. 3 This is good\, and it is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior\, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God\, and there is one mediator between God and men\, the man Christ Jesus\, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all\, the testimony to which was given at the proper time. 7 For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle (I am telling the truth\, I am not lying)\, a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. \n8 I desire then that in every place the men should pray\, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; 9 also that women should adorn themselves modestly and sensibly in seemly apparel\, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly attire 10 but by good deeds\, as befits women who profess religion. 11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness. 12 I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to keep silent. 13 For Adam was formed first\, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived\, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet woman will be saved through bearing children\, if she continues in faith and love and holiness\, with modesty. \n  \nLuke 24:36-53 \nJesus Appears to His Disciples \n36 As they were saying this\, Jesus himself stood among them\, and said to them\, “Peace to you.” 37 But they were startled and frightened\, and supposed that they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them\, “Why are you troubled\, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet\, that it is I myself; handle me\, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy\, and wondered\, he said to them\, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish\, 43 and he took it and ate before them. \n44 Then he said to them\, “These are my words which I spoke to you\, while I was still with you\, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures\, 46 and said to them\, “Thus it is written\, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead\, 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations\, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold\, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city\, until you are clothed with power from on high.” \nThe Ascension of Jesus \n50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany\, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them\, he parted from them\, and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him\, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy\, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God.

SUMMARY:6th Sunday of the Resurrection
DESCRIPTION:Isaiah 51:9-11; 52:7-12 \n9 Awake\, awake\, put on strength\, \nO arm of the Lord; \nawake\, as in days of old\, \nthe generations of long ago. \nWas it not you who cut Rahab in pieces\, \nwho pierced the dragon? \n10 Was it not you who dried up the sea\, \nthe waters of the great deep; \nwho made the depths of the sea a way \nfor the redeemed to pass over? \n11 And the ransomed of the Lord shall return\, \nand come to Zion with singing; \neverlasting joy shall be upon their heads; \nthey shall obtain joy and gladness\, \nand sorrow and sighing shall flee away. \n7 How beautiful upon the mountains \nare the feet of him who brings good tidings\, \nwho publishes peace\, who brings good tidings of good\, \nwho publishes salvation\, \nwho says to Zion\, “Your God reigns.” \n8 Listen\, your watchmen lift up their voice\, \ntogether they sing for joy; \nfor eye to eye they see \nthe return of the Lord to Zion. \n9 Break forth together into singing\, \nyou waste places of Jerusalem; \nfor the Lord has comforted his people\, \nhe has redeemed Jerusalem. \n10 The Lord has bared his holy arm \nbefore the eyes of all the nations; \nand all the ends of the earth shall see \nthe salvation of our God. \n11 Depart\, depart\, go out from there\, \ntouch no unclean thing; \ngo out from the midst of her\, purify yourselves\, \nyou who bear the vessels of the Lord. \n12 For you shall not go out in haste\, \nand you shall not go in flight\, \nfor the Lord will go before you\, \nand the God of Israel will be your rear guard. \n  \nActs of the Apostles 10:1-16 \nPeter and Cornelius \n1 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius\, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort\, 2 a devout man who feared God with all his household\, gave alms liberally to the people\, and prayed constantly to God. 3 About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him\, “Cornelius.” 4 And he stared at him in terror\, and said\, “What is it\, Lord?” And he said to him\, “Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God. 5 And now send men to Joppa\, and bring one Simon who is called Peter; 6 he is lodging with Simon\, a tanner\, whose house is by the seaside.” 7 When the angel who spoke to him had departed\, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those that waited on him\, 8 and having related everything to them\, he sent them to Joppa. \n9 The next day\, as they were on their journey and coming near the city\, Peter went up on the housetop to pray\, about the sixth hour. 10 And he became hungry and desired something to eat; but while they were preparing it\, he fell into a trance 11 and saw the heaven opened\, and something descending\, like a great sheet\, let down by four corners upon the earth. 12 In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air. 13 And there came a voice to him\, “Rise\, Peter; kill and eat.” 14 But Peter said\, “No\, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.” 15 And the voice came to him again a second time\, “What God has cleansed\, you must not call common.” 16 This happened three times\, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven. \n  \nEphesians 2:4-22 \n4 But God\, who is rich in mercy\, out of the great love with which he loved us\, 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses\, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)\, 6 and raised us up with him\, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus\, 7 that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing\, it is the gift of God—9 not because of works\, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship\, created in Christ Jesus for good works\, which God prepared beforehand\, that we should walk in them. \nOne in Christ \n11 Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh\, called the uncircumcision by what is called the circumcision\, which is made in the flesh by hands—12remember that you were at that time separated from Christ\, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel\, and strangers to the covenants of promise\, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near in the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace\, who has made us both one\, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility\, 15 by abolishing in his flesh the law of commandments and ordinances\, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two\, so making peace\, 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross\, thereby bringing the hostility to an end. 17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; 18 for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners\, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God\, 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets\, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone\, 21 in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22 in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. \n  \nJohn 17:1-26 \nJesus Prays for the Church \n1 When Jesus had spoken these words\, he lifted up his eyes to heaven and said\, “Father\, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you\, 2 since you have given him power over all flesh\, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life\, that they know you the only true God\, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth\, having accomplished the work which you gave me to do; 5 and now\, Father\, glorify me in your own presence with the glory which I had with you before the world was made. \n6 “I have manifested your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world; they were yours\, and you gave them to me\, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you; 8 for I have given them the words which you gave me\, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me\, for they are yours; 10 all mine are yours\, and yours are mine\, and I am glorified in them. 11 And now I am no more in the world\, but they are in the world\, and I am coming to you. Holy Father\, keep them in your name\, which you have given me\, that they may be one\, even as we are one. 12 While I was with them\, I kept them in your name\, which you have given me; I have guarded them\, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition\, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you; and these things I speak in the world\, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world\, even as I am not of the world. 15 I do not pray that you should take them out of the world\, but that you should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world\, even as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world\, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself\, that they also may be consecrated in truth. \n20 “I do not pray for these only\, but also for those who believe in me through their word\, 21 that they may all be one; even as you\, Father\, are in me\, and I in you\, that they also may be in us\, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory which you have given me I have given to them\, that they may be one even as we are one\, 23 in them and you in me\, that they may become perfectly one\, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 Father\, I desire that they also\, whom you have given me\, may be with me where I am\, to behold my glory which you have given me in your love for me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father\, the world has not known you\, but I have known you; and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name\, and I will make it known\, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them\, and I in them.”

SUMMARY:5th Sunday of the Resurrection – Memorial of Mar Addai the Apostle
DESCRIPTION:Isaiah 49:7-13 \n7 Thus says the Lord\, \nthe Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One\, \nto one deeply despised\, abhorred by the nations\, \nthe servant of rulers: \n“Kings shall see and arise; \nprinces\, and they shall prostrate themselves; \nbecause of the Lord\, who is faithful\, \nthe Holy One of Israel\, who has chosen you.” \n8 Thus says the Lord: \n“In a time of favor I have answered you\, \nin a day of salvation I have helped you; \nI have kept you and given you \nas a covenant to the people\, \nto establish the land\, \nto apportion the desolate heritages; \n9 saying to the prisoners\, ‘Come forth\,’ \nto those who are in darkness\, ‘Appear.’ \nThey shall feed along the ways\, \non all bare heights shall be their pasture; \n10 they shall not hunger or thirst\, \nneither scorching wind nor sun shall strike them\, \nfor he who has pity on them will lead them\, \nand by springs of water will guide them. \n11 And I will make all my mountains a way\, \nand my highways shall be raised up. \n12 Behold\, these shall come from afar\, \nand behold\, these from the north and from the west\, \nand these from the land of Syene.” \n13 Sing for joy\, O heavens\, and exult\, O earth; \nbreak forth\, O mountains\, into singing! \nFor the Lord has comforted his people\, \nand will have compassion on his afflicted. \n  \nActs of the Apostles 9:1-19 \nThe Conversion of Saul \n1 But Saul\, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord\, went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus\, so that if he found any belonging to the Way\, men or women\, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 3 Now as he journeyed he approached Damascus\, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed about him. 4 And he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him\, “Saul\, Saul\, why do you persecute me?” 5 And he said\, “Who are you\, Lord?” And he said\, “I am Jesus\, whom you are persecuting; 6 but rise and enter the city\, and you will be told what you are to do.” 7 The men who were traveling with him stood speechless\, hearing the voice but seeing no one. 8 Saul arose from the ground; and when his eyes were opened\, he could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. 9 And for three days he was without sight\, and neither ate nor drank. \n10 Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision\, “Ananias.” And he said\, “Here I am\, Lord.” 11 And the Lord said to him\, “Rise and go to the street called Straight\, and inquire in the house of Judas for a man of Tarsus named Saul; for behold\, he is praying\, 12 and he has seen a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.” 13 But Ananias answered\, “Lord\, I have heard from many about this man\, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem; 14 and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call upon your name.” 15 But the Lord said to him\, “Go\, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel; 16 for I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.” 17 So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said\, “Brother Saul\, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came\, has sent me that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized\, 19 and took food and was strengthened. \n  \nHebrews 10:19-36 \nA Call to Persevere \n19 Therefore\, brethren\, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus\, 20 by the new and living way which he opened for us through the curtain\, that is\, through his flesh\, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God\, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith\, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering\, for he who promised is faithful; 24 and let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works\, 25 not neglecting to meet together\, as is the habit of some\, but encouraging one another\, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. \n26 For if we sin deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth\, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins\, 27 but a fearful prospect of judgment\, and a fury of fire which will consume the adversaries. 28 A man who has violated the law of Moses dies without mercy at the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment do you think will be deserved by the man who has spurned the Son of God\, and profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified\, and outraged the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said\, “Vengeance is mine\, I will repay.” And again\, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. \n32 But recall the former days when\, after you were enlightened\, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings\, 33 sometimes being publicly exposed to abuse and affliction\, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. 34 For you had compassion on the prisoners\, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property\, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. 35 Therefore do not throw away your confidence\, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance\, so that you may do the will of God and receive what is promised. \n  \nJohn 21:1-14 \nJesus Appears to Disciples by the Sea of Tiberias \n1 After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he revealed himself in this way. 2Simon Peter\, Thomas called the Twin\, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee\, the sons of Zebedee\, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them\, “I am going fishing.” They said to him\, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat; but that night they caught nothing. \n4 Just as day was breaking\, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them\, “Children\, have you any fish?” They answered him\, “No.” 6 He said to them\, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat\, and you will find some.” So they cast it\, and now they were not able to haul it in\, for the quantity of fish. 7 That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter\, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord\, he put on his clothes\, for he was stripped for work\, and sprang into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the boat\, dragging the net full of fish\, for they were not far from the land\, but about a hundred yards off. \n9 When they got out on land\, they saw a charcoal fire there\, with fish lying on it\, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them\, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore\, full of large fish\, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and although there were so many\, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them\, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him\, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them\, and so with the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

SUMMARY:4th Sunday of the Resurrection
DESCRIPTION:Isaiah 49:13-23 \n13 Sing for joy\, O heavens\, and exult\, O earth; \nbreak forth\, O mountains\, into singing! \nFor the Lord has comforted his people\, \nand will have compassion on his afflicted. \n14 But Zion said\, “The Lord has forsaken me\, \nmy Lord has forgotten me.” \n15 “Can a woman forget her sucking child\, \nthat she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? \nEven these may forget\, \nyet I will not forget you. \n16 Behold\, I have graven you on the palms of my hands; \nyour walls are continually before me. \n17 Your builders outstrip your destroyers\, \nand those who laid you waste go forth from you. \n18 Lift up your eyes round about and see; \nthey all gather\, they come to you. \nAs I live\, says the Lord\, \nyou shall put them all on as an ornament\, \nyou shall bind them on as a bride does. \n19 “Surely your waste and your desolate places \nand your devastated land— \nsurely now you will be too narrow for your inhabitants\, \nand those who swallowed you up will be far away. \n20 The children born in the time of your bereavement \nwill yet say in your ears: \n‘The place is too narrow for me; \nmake room for me to dwell in.’ \n21 Then you will say in your heart: \n‘Who has borne me these? \nI was bereaved and barren\, \nexiled and put away\, \nbut who has brought up these? \nBehold\, I was left alone; \nfrom where then have these come?’ ” \n22 Thus says the Lord God: \n“Behold\, I will lift up my hand to the nations\, \nand raise my signal to the peoples; \nand they shall bring your sons in their bosom\, \nand your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders. \n23 Kings shall be your foster fathers\, \nand their queens your nursing mothers. \nWith their faces to the ground they shall bow \ndown to you\, and lick the dust of your \nfeet. \nThen you will know that I am the Lord; \nthose who wait for me shall not be put to shame.” \n  \nActs of the Apostles 8:14-25 \n14 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God\, they sent to them Peter and John\, 15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit; 16 for the Spirit had not yet fallen on any of them\, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands\, he offered them money\, 19 saying\, “Give me also this power\, that any one on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him\, “Your silver perish with you\, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! 21 You have neither part nor lot in this matter\, for your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent therefore of this wickedness of yours\, and pray to the Lord that\, if possible\, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity.” 24 And Simon answered\, “Pray for me to the Lord\, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.” \n25 Now when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord\, they returned to Jerusalem\, preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans. \n  \nEphesians1:15-2:7 \nPaul’s Prayer \n15 For this reason\, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints\, 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you\, remembering you in my prayers\, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ\, the Father of glory\, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him\, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened\, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you\, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints\, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power in us who believe\, according to the working of his great might 20 which he accomplished in Christ when he raised him from the dead and made him sit at his right hand in the heavenly places\, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion\, and above every name that is named\, not only in this age but also in that which is to come; 22 and he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the Church\, 23 which is his body\, the fullness of him who fills all in all. \nFrom Death to Life with Christ \n2 And you he made alive\, when you were dead through the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked\, following the course of this world\, following the prince of the power of the air\, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among these we all once lived in the passions of our flesh\, following the desires of body and mind\, and so we were by nature children of wrath\, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God\, who is rich in mercy\, out of the great love with which he loved us\, 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses\, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)\, 6 and raised us up with him\, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus\, 7 that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. \n  \nJohn 16:16-33 \nSorrow Will Turn into Joy \n16 “A little while\, and you will see me no more; again a little while\, and you will see me.” 17 Some of his disciples said to one another\, “What is this that he says to us\, ‘A little while\, and you will not see me\, and again a little while\, and you will see me’; and\, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 18 They said\, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he means.” 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him; so he said to them\, “Is this what you are asking yourselves\, what I meant by saying\, ‘A little while\, and you will not see me\, and again a little while\, and you will see me’? 20 Truly\, truly\, I say to you\, you will weep and lament\, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful\, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is in labor\, she has pain\, because her hour has come; but when she is delivered of the child\, she no longer remembers the anguish\, for joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So you have sorrow now\, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice\, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly\, truly\, I say to you\, if you ask anything of the Father\, he will give it to you in my name. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name; ask\, and you will receive\, that your joy may be full. \nPeace for the Disciples \n25 “I have said this to you in figures; the hour is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in figures but tell you plainly of the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name; and I do not say to you that I shall ask the Father for you; 27 for the Father himself loves you\, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from the Father. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world; again\, I am leaving the world and going to the Father.” \n29 His disciples said\, “Ah\, now you are speaking plainly\, not in any figure! 30 Now we know that you know all things\, and need none to question you; by this we believe that you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them\, “Do you now believe? 32 The hour is coming\, indeed it has come\, when you will be scattered\, every man to his home\, and will leave me alone; yet I am not alone\, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said this to you\, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer\, I have overcome the world.”

SUMMARY:Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple - Shimun Sawa
DESCRIPTION:Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple – Shimun Sawa – February 2 \nLeviticus 12:1-8 \nPurification of Women \n12 The Lord said to Moses\, 2 “Say to the sons of Israel\, If a woman conceives\, and bears a male child\, then she shall be unclean seven days; as at the time of her menstruation\, she shall be unclean. 3 And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. 4 Then she shall continue for thirty-three days in the blood of her purifying; she shall not touch any hallowed thing\, nor come into the sanctuary\, until the days of her purifying are completed. 5 But if she bears a female child\, then she shall be unclean two weeks\, as in her menstruation; and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying for sixty-six days. \n6 “And when the days of her purifying are completed\, whether for a son or for a daughter\, she shall bring to the priest at the door of the tent of meeting a lamb a year old for a burnt offering\, and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering\, 7 and he shall offer it before the Lord\, and make atonement for her; then she shall be clean from the flow of her blood. This is the law for her who bears a child\, either male or female. 8 And if she cannot afford a lamb\, then she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons\, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering; and the priest shall make atonement for her\, and she shall be clean.” \n  \nIsaiah 42:1-7 \nThe Lord’s Servant; and Israel’s Disobedience \n42 Behold my servant\, whom I uphold\, \nmy chosen\, in whom my soul delights; \nI have put my Spirit upon him\, \nhe will bring forth justice to the nations. \n2 He will not cry or lift up his voice\, \nor make it heard in the street; \n3 a bruised reed he will not break\, \nand a dimly burning wick he will not quench; \nhe will faithfully bring forth justice. \n4 He will not fail or be discouraged \ntill he has established justice in the earth; \nand the islands wait for his law. \n5 Thus says God\, the Lord\, \nwho created the heavens and stretched them out\, \nwho spread forth the earth and what comes from it\, \nwho gives breath to the people upon it \nand spirit to those who walk in it: \n6 “I am the Lord\, I have called you in righteousness\, \nI have taken you by the hand and kept you; \nI have given you as a covenant to the people\, \na light to the nations\, \n7 to open the eyes that are blind\, \nto bring out the prisoners from the dungeon\, \nfrom the prison those who sit in darkness. \n  \nRomans 9:30-10:4 \nIsrael’s Lack of Faith \n30 What shall we say\, then? \n  \nLuke 2:22-38 \nJesus Is Presented in the Temple \n22 And when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses\, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord\, “Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord\, “a pair of turtledoves\, or two young pigeons.” 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem\, whose name was Simeon\, and this man was righteous and devout\, looking for the consolation of Israel\, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus\, to do for him according to the custom of the law\, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said\, \n29 “Lord\, now let your servant depart in peace\, \naccording to your word; \n30 for my eyes have seen your salvation \n31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples\, \n32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles\, \nand for glory to your people Israel.” \n33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him; 34 and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother\, \n“Behold\, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel\, \nand for a sign that is spoken against \n35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also)\, \nthat thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.” \n36 And there was a prophetess\, Anna\, the daughter of Phanuel\, of the tribe of Asher; she was of a great age\, having lived with her husband seven years from her virginity\, 37 and as a widow till she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple\, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks to God\, and spoke of him to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.

SUMMARY:3rd Friday of Epiphany – Memorial of the Evangelists
DESCRIPTION:3rd Friday of Epiphany – Memorial of the Evangelists \n  \n1Kings 18:30-39 \n30 Then Elijah said to all the people\, “Come near to me”; and all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been thrown down; 31 Elijah took twelve stones\, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob\, to whom the word of the Lord came\, saying\, “Israel shall be your name”; 32 and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord. And he made a trench about the altar\, as great as would contain two measures of seed. 33 And he put the wood in order\, and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said\, “Fill four jars with water\, and pour it on the burnt offering\, and on the wood.” 34 And he said\, “Do it a second time”; and they did it a second time. And he said\, “Do it a third time”; and they did it a third time. 35 And the water ran round about the altar\, and filled the trench also with water. \n36 And at the time of the offering of the oblation\, Elijah the prophet came near and said\, “O Lord\, God of Abraham\, Isaac\, and Israel\, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel\, and that I am your servant\, and that I have done all these things at your word. 37 Answer me\, O Lord\, answer me\, that this people may know that you\, O Lord\, are God\, and that you have turned their hearts back.” 38 Then the fire of the Lord fell\, and consumed the burnt offering\, and the wood\, and the stones\, and the dust\, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 And when all the people saw it\, they fell on their faces; and they said\, “The Lord\, he is God; the Lord\, he is God.” \n  \nActs of the Apostles 5:12-32 \nThe Apostles Heal Many \n12 Now many signs and wonders were done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico. 13 None of the rest dared join them\, but the people held them in high honor. 14 And more than ever believers were added to the Lord\, multitudes both of men and women\, 15 so that they even carried out the sick into the streets\, and laid them on beds and pallets\, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. 16 The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem\, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits\, and they were all healed. \nThe Apostles Are Imprisoned and Brought before the Council \n17 But the high priest rose up and all who were with him\, that is\, the party of the Sadducees\, and filled with jealousy 18 they arrested the apostles and put them in the common prison. 19 But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out and said\, 20 “Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.” 21 And when they heard this\, they entered the temple at daybreak and taught. \nNow the high priest came and those who were with him and called together the council and all the senate of Israel\, and sent to the prison to have them brought. 22 But when the officers came\, they did not find them in the prison\, and they returned and reported\, 23 “We found the prison securely locked and the sentries standing at the doors\, but when we opened it we found no one inside.” 24 Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words\, they were much perplexed about them\, wondering what this would come to. 25 And some one came and told them\, “The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.” 26 Then the captain with the officers went and brought them\, but without violence\, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people. \n27 And when they had brought them\, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them\, 28 saying\, “We strictly charged you not to teach in this name\, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.” 29 But Peter and the apostles answered\, “We must obey God rather than men. 30 The God of our fathers raised Jesus whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. 31 God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior\, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32 And we are witnesses to these things\, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.” \n  \n1Corinthians 4:9-16; 2Corinthians 1:8-14 \n9 For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as last of all\, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world\, to angels and to men. 10 We are fools for Christ’s sake\, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak\, but you are strong. You are held in honor\, but we in disrepute. 11 To the present hour we hunger and thirst\, we are poorly clothed and buffeted and homeless\, 12 and we labor\, working with our own hands. When reviled\, we bless; when persecuted\, we endure; 13 when slandered\, we try to conciliate; we have become\, and are now\, as the refuse of the world\, the dregs of all things. \nFatherly Admonition \n14 I do not write this to make you ashamed\, but to admonish you as my beloved children. 15 For though you have countless guides in Christ\, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 16 I urge you\, then\, be imitators of me. \n8 For we do not want you to be ignorant\, brethren\, of the affliction we experienced in Asia; for we were so utterly\, unbearably crushed that we despaired of life itself. 9 Why\, we felt that we had received the sentence of death; but that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead; 10 he delivered us from so deadly a peril\, and he will deliver us; on him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again. 11 You also must help us by prayer\, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us in answer to many prayers. \n12 For our boast is this\, the testimony of our conscience that we have behaved in the world\, and still more toward you\, with holiness and godly sincerity\, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God. 13 For we write you nothing but what you can read and understand; I hope you will understand fully\, 14 as you have understood in part\, that you can be proud of us as we can be of you\, on the day of the Lord Jesus. \n  \nMatthew 9:35-10:15 \nThe Harvest Is Plentiful\, the Laborers Are Few \n35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages\, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom\, and healing every disease and every infirmity. 36 When he saw the crowds\, he had compassion for them\, because they were harassed and helpless\, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples\, “The harvest is plentiful\, but the laborers are few; 38 pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” \nThe Twelve Disciples \n10 And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits\, to cast them out\, and to heal every disease and every infirmity. 2 The names of the twelve apostles are these: first\, Simon\, who is called Peter\, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee\, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus\, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Cananaean\, and Judas Iscariot\, who betrayed him. \nThe Mission of the Twelve \n5 These Twelve Jesus sent out\, charging them\, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles\, and enter no town of the Samaritans\, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 And preach as you go\, saying\, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 Heal the sick\, raise the dead\, cleanse lepers\, cast out demons. You received without pay\, give without pay. 9 Take no gold\, nor silver\, nor copper in your belts\, 10 no bag for your journey\, nor two tunics\, nor sandals\, nor a staff; for the laborer deserves his food. 11 And whatever town or village you enter\, find out who is worthy in it\, and stay with him until you depart. 12 As you enter the house\, salute it. 13 And if the house is worthy\, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy\, let your peace return to you. 14 And if any one will not receive you or listen to your words\, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town. 15 Truly\, I say to you\, it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.

SUMMARY:2nd Sunday of Epiphany
DESCRIPTION:2nd Sunday of Epiphany \n  \nNumbers 10:29-11:10 \n29 And Moses said to Hobab the son of Reuel the Midianite\, Moses’ father-in-law\, “We are setting out for the place of which the Lord said\, ‘I will give it to you’; come with us\, and we will do you good; for the Lord has promised good to Israel.” 30 But he said to him\, “I will not go; I will depart to my own land and to my kindred.” 31 And he said\, “Do not leave us\, I beg you\, for you know how we are to encamp in the wilderness\, and you will serve as eyes for us. 32 And if you go with us\, whatever good the Lord will do to us\, the same will we do to you.” \n33 So they set out from the mount of the Lord three days’ journey; and the ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them three days’ journey\, to seek out a resting place for them. 34 And the cloud of the Lord was over them by day\, whenever they set out from the camp. \n35 And whenever the ark set out\, Moses said\, “Arise\, O Lord\, and let your enemies be scattered; and let them who hate you flee before you.” 36 And when it rested\, he said\, “Return\, O Lord\, to the ten thousand thousands of Israel.” \nComplaining in the Desert \n11 And the people complained in the hearing of the Lordabout their misfortunes; and when the Lord heard it\, his anger was kindled\, and the fire of the Lord burned among them\, and consumed some outlying parts of the camp. 2 Then the people cried to Moses; and Moses prayed to the Lord\, and the fire abated. 3 So the name of that place was called Taberah\, because the fire of the Lord burned among them. \n4 Now the rabble that was among them had a strong craving; and the people of Israel also wept again\, and said\, “O that we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt for nothing\, the cucumbers\, the melons\, the leeks\, the onions\, and the garlic; 6 but now our strength is dried up\, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at.” \n7 Now the manna was like coriander seed\, and its appearance like that of gum resin. 8 The people went about and gathered it\, and ground it in mills or beat it in mortars\, and boiled it in pots\, and made cakes of it; and the taste of it was like the taste of cakes baked with oil. 9 When the dew fell upon the camp in the night\, the manna fell with it. \n10 Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families\, every man at the door of his tent; and the anger of the Lordblazed hotly\, and Moses was displeased. \n  \nIsaiah 45:11-17 \n11 Thus says the Lord\, \nthe Holy One of Israel\, and his Maker: \n“Will you question me about my children\, \nor command me concerning the work of my hands? \n12 I made the earth\, \nand created man upon it; \nit was my hands that stretched out the heavens\, \nand I commanded all their host. \n13 I have aroused him in righteousness\, \nand I will make straight all his ways; \nhe shall build my city \nand set my exiles free\, \nnot for price or reward.” \nsays the Lord of hosts. \n14 Thus says the Lord: \n“The wealth of Egypt and the merchandise of Ethiopia\, \nand the Sabeans\, men of stature\, \nshall come over to you and be yours\, \nthey shall follow you; \nthey shall come over in chains and bow down to you. \nThey will make supplication to you\, saying: \n‘God is with you only\, and there is no other\, \nno god besides him.’ ” \n15 Truly\, you are a God who hide yourself\, \nO God of Israel\, the Savior. \n16 All of them are put to shame and confounded\, \nthe makers of idols go in confusion together. \n17 But Israel is saved by the Lord \nwith everlasting salvation; \nyou shall not be put to shame or confounded \nto all eternity. \n  \nHebrews 3:1-4:7 \nMoses a Servant\, Christ a Son \n3 Therefore\, holy brethren\, who share in a heavenly call\, consider Jesus\, the apostle and high priest of our confession. 2 He was faithful to him who appointed him\, just as Moses also was faithful in God’s house. 3 Yet Jesus has been counted worthy of as much more glory than Moses as the builder of a house has more honor than the house. 4 (For every house is built by some one\, but the builder of all things is God.) 5 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant\, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later\, 6 but Christ was faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house if we hold fast our confidence and pride in our hope. \nWarning against Unbelief \n7 Therefore\, as the Holy Spirit says\, \n“Today\, when you hear his voice\, \n8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion\, \non the day of testing in the wilderness\, \n9 where your fathers put me to the test \nand saw my works for forty years. \n10 Therefore I was provoked with that generation\, \nand said\, ‘They always go astray in their hearts; \nthey have not known my ways.’ \n11 As I swore in my wrath\, \n‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ” \n12 Take care\, brethren\, lest there be in any of you an evil\, unbelieving heart\, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day\, as long as it is called “today\,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we share in Christ\, if only we hold our first confidence firm to the end\, 15 while it is said\, \n“Today\, when you hear his voice\, \ndo not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” \n16 Who were they that heard and yet were rebellious? Was it not all those who left Egypt under the leadership of Moses? 17 And with whom was he provoked forty years? Was it not with those who sinned\, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that they should never enter his rest\, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. \nThe Rest That God Promised \n4 Therefore\, while the promise of entering his rest remains\, let us fear lest any of you be judged to have failed to reach it. 2 For good news came to us just as to them; but the message which they heard did not benefit them\, because it did not meet with faith in the hearers. 3 For we who have believed enter that rest\, as he has said\, \n“As I swore in my wrath\, \n‘They shall never enter my rest\,’ ” \nalthough his works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way\, “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.” 5 And again in this place he said\, \n“They shall never enter my rest.” \n6 Since therefore it remains for some to enter it\, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience\, 7 again he sets a certain day\, “Today\,” saying through David so long afterward\, in the words already quoted\, \n“Today\, when you hear his voice\, \ndo not harden your hearts.” \n  \nJohn 1:1-18 \nThe Word Became Flesh \n1 In the beginning was the Word\, and the Word was with God\, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God; 3 all things were made through him\, and without him was not anything made that was made. 4 In him was life\, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness\, and the darkness has not overcome it. \n6 There was a man sent from God\, whose name was John. 7 He came for testimony\, to bear witness to the light\, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light\, but came to bear witness to the light. \n9 The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world\, and the world was made through him\, yet the world knew him not. 11 He came to his own home\, and his own people received him not. 12 But to all who received him\, who believed in his name\, he gave power to become children of God; 13 who were born\, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man\, but of God. \n14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us\, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory\, glory as of the only-begotten Son from the Father. 15 John bore witness to him\, and cried\, “This was he of whom I said\, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me\, for he was before me.’ ”) 16 And from his fullness have we all received\, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only-begotten Son\, who is in the bosom of the Father\, he has made him known. \n

SUMMARY:2nd Friday of Epiphany – Memorial of Ss. Peter & Paul
DESCRIPTION:2nd Friday of Epiphany – Memorial of Ss. Peter & Paul \n  \n2Kings 4:8-37 \nElisha and the Shunammite Couple \n8 One day Elisha went on to Shunem\, where a wealthy woman lived\, who urged him to eat some food. So whenever he passed that way\, he would turn in there to eat food. 9 And she said to her husband\, “Behold now\, I perceive that this is a holy man of God\, who is continually passing our way. 10 Let us make a small roof chamber with walls\, and put there for him a bed\, a table\, a chair\, and a lamp\, so that whenever he comes to us\, he can go in there.” \n11 One day he came there\, and he turned into the chamber and rested there. 12 And he said to Gehazi his servant\, “Call this Shunammite.” When he had called her\, she stood before him. 13 And he said to him\, “Say now to her\, See\, you have taken all this trouble for us; what is to be done for you? Would you have a word spoken on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?” She answered\, “I dwell among my own people.” 14 And he said\, “What then is to be done for her?” Gehazi answered\, “Well\, she has no son\, and her husband is old.” 15 He said\, “Call her.” And when he had called her\, she stood in the doorway. 16 And he said\, “At this season\, when the time comes round\, you shall embrace a son.” And she said\, “No\, my lord\, O man of God; do not lie to your maidservant.” 17 But the woman conceived\, and she bore a son about that time the following spring\, as Elisha had said to her. \nElisha Restores the Shunammite’s Son \n18 When the child had grown\, he went out one day to his father among the reapers. 19 And he said to his father\, “Oh\, my head\, my head!” The father said to his servant\, “Carry him to his mother.” 20 And when he had lifted him\, and brought him to his mother\, the child sat on her lap till noon\, and then he died. 21 And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God\, and shut the door upon him\, and went out. 22 Then she called to her husband\, and said\, “Send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys\, that I may quickly go to the man of God\, and come back again.” 23 And he said\, “Why will you go to him today? It is neither new moon nor sabbath.” She said\, “It will be well.” 24 Then she saddled the donkey\, and she said to her servant\, “Urge the beast on; do not slacken the pace for me unless I tell you.” 25 So she set out\, and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel. \nWhen the man of God saw her coming\, he said to Gehazi his servant\, “Look\, yonder is the Shunammite; 26 run at once to meet her\, and say to her\, Is it well with you? Is it well with your husband? Is it well with the child?” And she answered\, “It is well.” 27 And when she came to the mountain to the man of God\, she caught hold of his feet. And Gehazi came to thrust her away. But the man of God said\, “Let her alone\, for she is in bitter distress; and the Lord has hidden it from me\, and has not told me.” 28 Then she said\, “Did I ask my lord for a son? Did I not say\, Do not deceive me?” 29 He said to Gehazi\, “Gird up your loins\, and take my staff in your hand\, and go. If you meet any one\, do not salute him; and if any one salutes you\, do not reply; and lay my staff upon the face of the child.” 30 Then the mother of the child said\, “As the Lordlives\, and as you yourself live\, I will not leave you.” So he arose and followed her. 31 Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff upon the face of the child\, but there was no sound or sign of life. Therefore he returned to meet him\, and told him\, “The child has not awaked.” \n32 When Elisha came into the house\, he saw the child lying dead on his bed. 33 So he went in and shut the door upon the two of them\, and prayed to the Lord. 34 Then he went up and lay upon the child\, putting his mouth upon his mouth\, his eyes upon his eyes\, and his hands upon his hands; and as he stretched himself upon him\, the flesh of the child became warm. 35 Then he got up again\, and walked once back and forth in the house\, and went up\, and stretched himself upon him; the child sneezed seven times\, and the child opened his eyes. 36 Then he summoned Gehazi and said\, “Call this Shunammite.” So he called her. And when she came to him\, he said\, “Take up your son.” 37 She came and fell at his feet\, bowing to the ground; then she took up her son and went out. \n  \nActs of the Apostles 9:32-42 \nPeter Heals Aeneas in Lydda \n32 Now as Peter went here and there among them all\, he came down also to the saints that lived at Lydda. 33 There he found a man named Aeneas\, who had been bedridden for eight years and was paralyzed. 34 And Peter said to him\, “Aeneas\, Jesus Christ heals you; rise and make your bed.” And immediately he rose. 35 And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him\, and they turned to the Lord. \nPeter in Joppa \n36 Now there was at Joppa a disciple named Tabitha\, which means Dorcas or Gazelle. She was full of good works and acts of charity. 37 In those days she fell sick and died; and when they had washed her\, they laid her in an upper room. 38 Since Lydda was near Joppa\, the disciples\, hearing that Peter was there\, sent two men to him entreating him\, “Please come to us without delay.” 39 So Peter rose and went with them. And when he had come\, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood beside him weeping\, and showing coats and garments which Dorcas made while she was with them. 40 But Peter put them all outside and knelt down and prayed; then turning to the body he said\, “Tabitha\, rise.” And she opened her eyes\, and when she saw Peter she sat up. 41 And he gave her his hand and lifted her up. Then calling the saints and widows he presented her alive. 42 And it became known throughout all Joppa\, and many believed in the Lord. \n  \n2Corinthians 10:1-7; 11:21-33 \nPaul Defends His Ministry \n10 I\, Paul\, myself entreat you\, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who am humble when face to face with you\, but bold to you when I am away! 2 I beg of you that when I am present I may not have to show boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of acting in worldly fashion. 3 For though we live in the world we are not carrying on a worldly war\, 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God\, and take every thought captive to obey Christ\, 6 Being ready to punish every disobedience\, when your obedience is complete. \n7 Look at what is before your eyes. If any one is confident that he is Christ’s\, let him remind himself that as he is Christ’s\, so are we. \nWhatever any one dares to boast of—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast of that. 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I. 23 Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors\, far more imprisonments\, with countless beatings\, and often near death. 24 Five times I have received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. 25 Three times I have been beaten with rods; once I was stoned. Three times I have been shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been adrift at sea; 26 on frequent journeys\, in danger from rivers\, danger from robbers\, danger from my own people\, danger from Gentiles\, danger in the city\, danger in the wilderness\, danger at sea\, danger from false brethren; 27 in toil and hardship\, through many a sleepless night\, in hunger and thirst\, often without food\, in cold and exposure. 28 And\, apart from other things\, there is the daily pressure upon me of my anxiety for all the churches. 29 Who is weak\, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall\, and I am not indignant? \n30 If I must boast\, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus\, he who is blessed for ever\, knows that I do not lie. 32 At Damascus\, the governor under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to seize me\, 33 but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall\, and escaped his hands. \n  \nMatthew 16:13-19; John 21:15-19 \nPeter’s Declaration That Jesus Is the Christ \n13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi\, he asked his disciples\, “Who do men say that the Son of man is?” 14 And they said\, “Some say John the Baptist\, others say Elijah\, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them\, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied\, “You are the Christ\, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him\, “Blessed are you\, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you\, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you\, you are Peter\, and on this rock I will build my Church\, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven\, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven\, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” \nPeter Is Given a Command \n15 When they had finished breakfast\, Jesus said to Simon Peter\, “Simon\, son of John\, do you love me more than these?” He said to him\, “Yes\, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him\, “Feed my lambs.” 16 A second time he said to him\, “Simon\, son of John\, do you love me?” He said to him\, “Yes\, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him\, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time\, “Simon\, son of John\, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time\, “Do you love me?” And he said to him\, “Lord\, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him\, “Feed my sheep. 18 Truly\, truly\, I say to you\, when you were young\, you fastened your own belt and walked where you would; but when you are old\, you will stretch out your hands\, and another will fasten your belt for you and carry you where you do not wish to go.” 19 This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him\, “Follow me.

SUMMARY:Wednesday After Epiphany – Bautha of the Virgins
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday After Epiphany – Bautha of the Virgins \n  \nJoel 2:15-27 \n15 Blow the trumpet in Zion; \nsanctify a fast; \ncall a solemn assembly; \n16 gather the people. \n27 You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel\, \nand that I\, the Lord\, am your God and there is none else. \nAnd my people shall never again be put to shame. \n  \nJonah 3:1-4:11 \nNineveh Repents \n3 Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time\, saying\, 2 “Arise\, go to Nineveh\, that great city\, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh\, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city\, three days’ journey in breadth. 4 Jonah began to go into the city\, going a day’s journey. And he cried\, “Yet forty days\, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” 5 And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast\, and put on sackcloth\, from the greatest of them to the least of them. \n6 Then tidings reached the king of Nineveh\, and he arose from his throne\, removed his robe\, and covered himself with sackcloth\, and sat in ashes. 7 And he made proclamation and published through Nineveh\, “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast\, herd nor flock\, taste anything; let them not feed\, or drink water\, 8 but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth\, and let them cry mightily to God; yes\, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence which is in his hands. 9 Who knows\, God may yet repent and turn from his fierce anger\, so that we perish not?” \n10 When God saw what they did\, how they turned from their evil way\, God repented of the evil which he had said he would do to them; and he did not do it. \nJonah’s Anger \n4 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly\, and he was angry. 2 And he prayed to the Lord and said\, “I pray you\, Lord\, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful\, slow to anger\, and abounding in mercy\, and that you repent of evil. 3 Therefore now\, O Lord\, take my life from me\, I beg you\, for it is better for me to die than to live.” 4 And the Lord said\, “Do you do well to be angry?” 5 Then Jonah went out of the city and sat to the east of the city\, and made a booth for himself there. He sat under it in the shade\, till he should see what would become of the city. \nGod Reproves Jonah \n6 And the Lord God appointed a plant\, and made it come up over Jonah\, that it might be a shade over his head\, to save him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant. 7 But when dawn came up the next day\, God appointed a worm which attacked the plant\, so that it withered. 8 When the sun rose\, God appointed a sultry east wind\, and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah so that he was faint; and he asked that he might die\, and said\, “It is better for me to die than to live.” 9 But God said to Jonah\, “Do you do well to be angry for the plant?” And he said\, “I do well to be angry\, angry enough to die.” 10 And the Lord said\, “You pity the plant\, for which you did not labor\, nor did you make it grow\, which came into being in a night\, and perished in a night. 11 And should not I pity Nineveh\, that great city\, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who do not know their right hand from their left\, and also much cattle?” \n  \nRomans 9:14-10:17 \n14 What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! 15 For he says to Moses\, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy\, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So it depends not upon man’s will or exertion\, but upon God’s mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh\, “I have raised you up for the very purpose of showing my power in you\, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 So then he has mercy upon whomever he wills\, and he hardens the heart of whomever he wills. \nGod’s Wrath and Mercy \n19 You will say to me then\, “Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?” 20 But who are you\, a man\, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder\, “Why have you made me thus?” 21 Has the potter no right over the clay\, to make out of the same lump one vessel for beauty and another for menial use? 22 What if God\, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power\, has endured with much patience the vessels of wrath made for destruction\, 23 in order to make known the riches of his glory for the vessels of mercy\, which he has prepared beforehand for glory\, 24 even us whom he has called\, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? \n25 As indeed he says in Hosea\, \n“Those who were not my people \nI will call ‘my people\,’ \nand her who was not beloved \nI will call ‘my beloved.’ ” \n26 “And in the very place where it was said to them\, ‘You are not my people\,’ \nthey will be called ‘sons of the living God.’ ” \n27 And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea\, only a remnant of them will be saved; 28 for the Lord will execute his sentence upon the earth with rigor and dispatch.” 29 And as Isaiah predicted\, \n“If the Lord of hosts had not left us children\, \nwe would have fared like Sodom and been made like Gomorrah.” \nIsrael’s Lack of Faith \n30 What shall we say\, then? \n  \nMatthew 6:1-18 \nConcerning Almsgiving \n6 “Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. \n2 “Thus\, when you give alms\, sound no trumpet before you\, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets\, that they may be praised by men. Truly\, I say to you\, they have their reward. 3 But when you give alms\, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing\, 4 so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. \nConcerning Prayer \n5 “And when you pray\, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners\, that they may be seen by men. Truly\, I say to you\, they have their reward. 6 But when you pray\, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. \n7 “And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them\, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: \nOur Father who art in heaven\, \nHallowed be thy name. \n10 Thy kingdom come. \nThy will be done \nOn earth as it is in heaven. \n11 Give us this day our daily bread; \n12 And forgive us our trespasses \nAs we forgive those who trespass against us; \n13 And lead us not into temptation\, \nBut deliver us from evil. \n14 For if you forgive men their trespasses\, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; 15 but if you do not forgive men their trespasses\, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. \nConcerning Fasting \n16  “And when you fast\, do not look dismal\, like the hypocrites\, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly\, I say to you\, they have their reward. 17 But when you fast\, anoint your head and wash your face\, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. \n

SUMMARY:Tuesday After Epiphany – Bautha of the Virgins
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday After Epiphany – Bautha of the Virgins \n  \n1Samuel 7:3-9 \nSamuel as Judge of Israel \n3 Then Samuel said to all the house of Israel\, “If you are returning to the Lord with all your heart\, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you\, and direct your heart to the Lord\, and serve him only\, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.” 4 So Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtaroth\, and they served the Lordonly. \n5 Then Samuel said\, “Gather all Israel at Mizpah\, and I will pray to the Lord for you.” 6 So they gathered at Mizpah\, and drew water and poured it out before the Lord\, and fasted on that day\, and said there\, “We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the sons of Israel at Mizpah. 7 Now when the Philistines heard that the sons of Israel had gathered at Mizpah\, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the sons of Israel heard of it they were afraid of the Philistines. 8 And the sons of Israel said to Samuel\, “Do not cease to cry to the Lord our God for us\, that he may save us from the hand of the Philistines.” 9 So Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord; and Samuel cried to the Lord for Israel\, and the Lord answered him. \n  \nIsaiah 59:1-18 \nInjustice and Oppression to Be Punished \n59 Behold\, the Lord’s hand is not shortened\, \nthat it cannot save\, \nor his ear dull\, that it cannot hear; \n2 but your iniquities have made a separation \nbetween you and your God\, \nand your sins have hidden his face from you \nso that he does not hear. \n3 For your hands are defiled with blood \nand your fingers with iniquity; \nyour lips have spoken lies\, \nyour tongue mutters wickedness. \n4 No one enters suit justly\, \nno one goes to law honestly; \nthey rely on empty pleas\, they speak lies\, \nthey conceive mischief and bring forth iniquity. \n5 They hatch adders’ eggs\, \nthey weave the spider’s web; \nhe who eats their eggs dies\, \nand from one which is crushed a viper is hatched. \n6 Their webs will not serve as clothing; \nmen will not cover themselves with what they make. \nTheir works are works of iniquity\, \nand deeds of violence are in their hands. \n7 Their feet run to evil\, \nand they make haste to shed innocent blood; \ntheir thoughts are thoughts of iniquity\, \ndesolation and destruction are in their highways. \n8 The way of peace they know not\, \nand there is no justice in their paths; \nthey have made their roads crooked\, \nno one who goes in them knows peace. \n9 Therefore justice is far from us\, \nand righteousness does not overtake us; \nwe look for light\, and behold\, darkness\, \nand for brightness\, but we walk in gloom. \n10 We grope for the wall like the blind\, \nwe grope like those who have no eyes; \nwe stumble at noon as in the twilight\, \namong those in full vigor we are like dead men. \n11 We all growl like bears\, \nwe moan and moan like doves; \nwe look for justice\, but there is none; \nfor salvation\, but it is far from us. \n12 For our transgressions are multiplied before you\, \nand our sins testify against us; \nfor our transgressions are with us\, \nand we know our iniquities: \n13 transgressing\, and denying the Lord\, \nand turning away from following our God\, \nspeaking oppression and revolt\, \nconceiving and uttering from the heart lying words. \n14 Justice is turned back\, \nand righteousness stands afar off; \nfor truth has fallen in the public squares\, \nand uprightness cannot enter. \n15 Truth is lacking\, \nand he who departs from evil makes himself a prey. \nThe Lord saw it\, and it displeased him \nthat there was no justice. \n16 He saw that there was no man\, \nand wondered that there was no one to intervene; \nthen his own arm brought him victory\, \nand his righteousness upheld him. \n17 He put on righteousness as a breastplate\, \nand a helmet of salvation upon his head; \nhe put on garments of vengeance for clothing\, \nand wrapped himself in fury as a mantle. \n18 According to their deeds\, so will he repay\, \nwrath to his adversaries\, repayment to his enemies; \nto the islands he will render repayment. \n  \nRomans 12:1-21 \nThe New Life in Christ \n12 I appeal to you therefore\, brethren\, by the mercies of God\, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice\, holy and acceptable to God\, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind\, that you may prove what is the will of God\, what is good and acceptable and perfect. \n3 For by the grace given to me I bid every one among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think\, but to think with sober judgment\, each according to the measure of faith which God has assigned him. 4 For as in one body we have many members\, and all the members do not have the same function\, 5 so we\, though many\, are one body in Christ\, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us\, let us use them: if prophecy\, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service\, in our serving; he who teaches\, in his teaching; 8 he who exhorts\, in his exhortation; he who contributes\, in liberality; he who gives aid\, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy\, with cheerfulness. \nMarks of the True Christian \n9 Let love be genuine; hate what is evil\, hold fast to what is good; 10 love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Never flag in zeal\, be aglow with the Spirit\, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in your hope\, be patient in tribulation\, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints\, practice hospitality. \n14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice\, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty\, but associate with the lowly; never be conceited. 17 Repay no one evil for evil\, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. 18 If possible\, so far as it depends upon you\, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved\, never avenge yourselves\, but leave it to the wrath of God; for it is written\, “Vengeance is mine\, I will repay\, says the Lord.” 20 No\, “if your enemy is hungry\, feed him; if he is thirsty\, give him drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil\, but overcome evil with good. \n  \nLuke 18:2-14 \nThe Parable of the Widow and the Unrighteous Judge \n2 He said\, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor regarded man; 3 and there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying\, ‘Vindicate me against my adversary.’ 4 For a while he refused; but afterward he said to himself\, ‘Though I neither fear God nor regard man\, 5 yet because this widow bothers me\, I will vindicate her\, or she will wear me out by her continual coming.’ ” 6 And the Lord said\, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. 7 And will not God vindicate his elect\, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? 8 I tell you\, he will vindicate them speedily. Nevertheless\, when the Son of man comes\, will he find faith on earth?” \nThe Parable of the Pharisees and the Tax Collector \n9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray\, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself\, ‘God\, I thank you that I am not like other men\, extortioners\, unjust\, adulterers\, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week\, I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector\, standing far off\, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven\, but beat his breast\, saying\, ‘God\, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you\, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for every one who exalts himself will be humbled\, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

SUMMARY:Monday After Epiphany – Bautha of the Virgins
DESCRIPTION:Monday After Epiphany – Bautha of the Virgins \n  \nIsaiah 63:17-64:12 \n17 O Lord\, why do you make us err from your ways \nand harden our heart\, so that we fear you not? \nReturn for the sake of your servants\, \nthe tribes of your heritage. \n18 Your holy people possessed your sanctuary a little while; \nour adversaries have trodden it down. \n19 We have become like those over whom you have never ruled\, \nlike those who are not called by your name. \nPrayer for Mercy \n64 O that you would tear the heavens and come down\, \nthat the mountains might quake at your presence— \n2  as when fire kindles brushwood \nand the fire causes water to boil— \nto make your name known to your adversaries\, \nand that the nations might tremble at your presence! \n3 When you did terrible things which we looked not for\, \nyou came down\, the mountains quaked at your presence. \n4 From of old no one has heard \nor perceived by the ear\, \nno eye has seen a God besides you\, \nwho works for those who wait for him. \n5 You meet him that joyfully works righteousness\, \nthose that remember you in your ways. \nBehold\, you were angry\, and we sinned; \nin our sins we have been a long time\, and shall we be saved? \n6 We have all become like one who is unclean\, \nand all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. \nWe all fade like a leaf\, \nand our iniquities\, like the wind\, take us away. \n7 There is no one that calls upon your name\, \nthat bestirs himself to take hold of you; \nfor you have hidden your face from us\, \nand have delivered us into the hand of our iniquities. \n8 Yet\, O Lord\, you are our Father; \nwe are the clay\, and you are our potter; \nwe are all the work of your hand. \n9 Be not exceedingly angry\, O Lord\, \nand remember not iniquity for ever. \nBehold\, consider\, we are all your people. \n10 Your holy cities have become a wilderness\, \nZion has become a wilderness\, \nJerusalem a desolation. \n11 Our holy and beautiful house\, \nwhere our fathers praised you\, \nhas been burned by fire\, \nand all our pleasant places have become ruins. \n12 Will you restrain yourself at these things\, O Lord? \nWill you keep silent\, and afflict us sorely? \n  \nHabakkuk 3:1-19 \nHabakkuk’s Prayer \n3 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet\, according to Shigionoth. \n2 O Lord\, I have heard the report of you\, \nand your work\, O Lord\, I fear. \nIn the midst of the years renew it; \nin the midst of the years make it known; \nin wrath remember mercy. \n3 God came from Teman\, \nand the Holy One from Mount Paran. \nHis glory covered the heavens\, \nand the earth was full of his praise. \n4 His brightness was like the light\, \nrays flashed from his hand; \nand there he veiled his power. \n5 Before him went pestilence\, \nand plague followed close behind. \n6 He stood and measured the earth; \nhe looked and shook the nations; \nThen the eternal mountains were scattered\, \nthe everlasting hills sank low. \nHis ways were as of old. \n7 I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction; \nthe curtains of the land of Midian trembled. \n8 Was your wrath against the rivers\, O Lord? \nWas your anger against the rivers\, \nor your indignation against the sea\, \nwhen you rode upon your horses\, \nupon your chariot of victory? \n9 You stripped the sheath from your bow\, \nand put the arrows to the string. \nYou split the earth with rivers. \n10 The mountains saw you\, and writhed; \nthe raging waters swept on; \nthe deep gave forth its voice\, \nit lifted its hands on high. \n11 The sun and moon stood still in their habitation \nat the light of your arrows as they sped\, \nat the flash of your glittering spear. \n12 You bestrode the earth in fury\, \nyou trampled the nations in anger. \n13 You went forth for the salvation of your people\, \nfor the salvation of your anointed. \nYou crushed the head of the wicked\, \nlaying him bare from thigh to neck. \n14 You pierced with your shafts the head of his warriors\, \nwho came like a whirlwind to scatter me\, \nrejoicing as if to devour the poor in secret. \n15 You trampled the sea with your horses\, \nthe surging of mighty waters. \n16 I hear\, and my body trembles\, \nmy lips quiver at the sound; \nrottenness enters into my bones\, \nmy steps totter beneath me. \nI will quietly wait for the day of trouble \nto come upon people who invade us. \n17 Though the fig tree does not blossom\, \nnor fruit be on the vines\, \nthe produce of the olive fail \nand the fields yield no food\, \nthe flock be cut off from the fold \nand there be no herd in the stalls\, \n18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord\, \nI will joy in the God of my salvation. \n19 God\, the Lord\, is my strength; \nhe makes my feet like deer’s feet\, \nhe makes me tread upon my high places. \n  \n1Timothy 2:1-3:10 \nInstructions concerning Prayer \n2 First of all\, then\, I urge that supplications\, prayers\, intercessions\, and thanksgivings be made for all men\, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions\, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life\, godly and respectful in every way. \nQualifications of Bishops \n3 The saying is sure: If any one aspires to the office of bishop\, he desires a noble task. 2 Now a bishop must be above reproach\, the husband of one wife\, temperate\, sensible\, dignified\, hospitable\, an apt teacher\, 3 no drunkard\, not violent but gentle\, not quarrelsome\, and no lover of money. 4 He must manage his own household well\, keeping his children submissive and respectful in every way; 5 for if a man does not know how to manage his own household\, how can he care for God’s Church? 6 He must not be a recent convert\, or he may be puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil; 7 moreover he must be well thought of by outsiders\, or he may fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. \nQualifications of Deacons \n8 Deacons likewise must be serious\, not double-tongued\, not addicted to much wine\, not greedy for gain; 9 they must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 And let them also be tested first; then if they prove themselves blameless let them serve as deacons. \n  \nMatthew 18:23-35 \nThe Parable of the Unmerciful Servant \n23 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began the reckoning\, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; 25 and as he could not pay\, his lord ordered him to be sold\, with his wife and children and all that he had\, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant fell on his knees\, imploring him\, ‘Lord\, have patience with me\, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But that same servant\, as he went out\, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said\, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him\, ‘Have patience with me\, and I will pay you.’ 30 He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place\, they were greatly distressed\, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. 32 Then his lord summoned him and said to him\, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me; 33 and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant\, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his lord delivered him to the jailers\, till he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you\, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

SUMMARY:1st Sunday of Epiphany
DESCRIPTION:1st Sunday of Epiphany \n  \nExodus 3:1-15 \nThe Sons of Israel \n1These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob\, each with his household: 2 Reuben\, Simeon\, Levi\, and Judah\, 3 Issachar\, Zebulun\, and Benjamin\, 4 Dan and Naphtali\, Gad and Asher. 5 All the offspring of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. 6 Then Joseph died\, and all his brothers\, and all that generation. 7 But the descendants of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong; so that the land was filled with them. \nThe Israelites Are Oppressed by the Egyptians \n8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt\, who did not know Joseph. 9 And he said to his people\, “Behold\, the sons of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. 10  Come\, let us deal shrewdly with them\, lest they multiply\, and\, if war befall us\, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens; and they built for Pharaoh store-cities\, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they were oppressed\, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the sons of Israel. 13 So they made the sons of Israel serve with rigor\, 14 and made their lives bitter with hard service\, in mortar and brick\, and in all kinds of work in the field; in all their work they made them serve with rigor. \n  \nIsaiah 44:21-45:4 \n21 Remember these things\, O Jacob\, \nand Israel\, for you are my servant; \nI formed you\, you are my servant; \nO Israel\, you will not be forgotten by me. \n22 I have swept away your transgressions like a cloud\, \nand your sins like mist; \nreturn to me\, for I have redeemed you. \n23 Sing\, O heavens\, for the Lord has done it; \nshout\, O depths of the earth; \nbreak forth into singing\, O mountains\, \nO forest\, and every tree in it! \nFor the Lord has redeemed Jacob\, \nand will be glorified in Israel. \n24 Thus says the Lord\, your Redeemer\, \nwho formed you from the womb: \n“I am the Lord\, who made all things\, \nwho stretched out the heavens alone\, \nwho spread out the earth—Who was with me?— \n25 who frustrates the omens of liars\, \nand makes fools of diviners; \nwho turns wise men back\, \nand makes their knowledge foolish; \n26 who confirms the word of his servant\, \nand performs the counsel of his messengers; \nwho says of Jerusalem\, ‘She shall be inhabited\,’ \nand of the cities of Judah\, ‘They shall be built\, \nand I will raise up their ruins’; \n27 who says to the deep\, ‘Be dry\, \nI will dry up your rivers’; \n28 who says of Cyrus\, ‘He is my shepherd\, \nand he shall fulfill all my purpose’; \nsaying of Jerusalem\, ‘She shall be built\,’ \nand of the temple\, ‘Your foundation shall be laid.’ ” \nCyrus\, God’s Instrument \n45 Thus says the Lord to his anointed\, to Cyrus\, \nwhose right hand I have grasped\, \nto subdue nations before him \nand uncover the loins of kings\, \nto open doors before him \nthat gates may not be closed: \n2 “I will go before you \nand level the mountains\, \nI will break in pieces the doors of bronze \nand cut asunder the bars of iron\, \n3 I will give you the treasures of darkness \nand the hoards in secret places\, \nthat you may know that it is I\, the Lord\, \nthe God of Israel\, who call you by your name. \n4 For the sake of my servant Jacob\, \nand Israel my chosen\, \nI call you by your name\, \nI surname you\, though you do not know me. \n  \n2Timothy 3:1-15 \nGodlessness in the Last Days \n1 But understand this\, that in the last days there will come times of stress. 2 For men will be lovers of self\, lovers of money\, proud\, arrogant\, abusive\, disobedient to their parents\, ungrateful\, unholy\, 3 inhuman\, implacable\, slanderers\, profligates\, fierce\, haters of good\, 4 treacherous\, reckless\, swollen with conceit\, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God\, 5 holding the form of religion but denying the power of it. Avoid such people. 6 For among them are those who make their way into households and capture weak women\, burdened with sins and swayed by various impulses\, 7 who will listen to anybody and can never arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 8  As Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses\, so these men also oppose the truth\, men of corrupt mind and counterfeit faith; 9 but they will not get very far\, for their folly will be plain to all\, as was that of those two men. \nPaul’s Charge to Timothy \n10 Now you have observed my teaching\, my conduct\, my aim in life\, my faith\, my patience\, my love\, my steadfastness\, 11 my persecutions\, my sufferings\, what befell me at Antioch\, at Iconium\, and at Lystra\, what persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted\, 13 while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse\, deceivers and deceived. 14 But as for you\, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed\, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the Sacred Writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. \n  \nLuke 4:14-30 \nJesus Begins Preaching and Teaching in Galilee \n14  And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee\, and a report concerning him went out through all the surrounding country. 15  And he taught in their synagogues\, being glorified by all. \nThe Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth \n16  And he came to Nazareth\, where he had been brought up; and he went to the synagogue\, as was his custom\, on the sabbath day. And he stood up to read; 17 and there was given to him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened the book and found the place where it was written\, \n18  The Spirit of the Lord is upon me\, \nbecause he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. \nHe has sent me to proclaim release to the captives \nand recovering of sight to the blind\, \nto set at liberty those who are oppressed\, \n19 to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” \n20 And he closed the book\, and gave it back to the attendant\, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them\, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him\, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth; and they said\, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” 23 And he said to them\, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb\, ‘Physician\, heal yourself; what we have heard you did at Capernaum\, do here also in your own country.’ ” 24 And he said\, “Truly\, I say to you\, no prophet is acceptable in his own country. 25  But in truth\, I tell you\, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah\, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months\, when there came a great famine over all the land; 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath\, in the land of Sidon\, to a woman who was a widow. 27  And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha; and none of them was cleansed\, but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When they heard this\, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29  And they rose up and put him out of the city\, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built\, that they might throw him down headlong. 30  But passing through the midst of them he went away. \n

SUMMARY:1st Friday of Epiphany – Memorial of St. John the Baptist
DESCRIPTION:1st Friday of Epiphany – Memorial of St. John the Baptist \n  \nIsaiah 35:3-10; Isaiah 40:1-8 \nThe Lord Will Come to Save \n3 Strengthen the weak hands\, \nand make firm the feeble knees. \nGod Comforts His People \n40 Comfort\, comfort my people\, says your God. \n2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem\, \nand cry to her \nthat her warfare is ended\, \nthat her iniquity is pardoned\, \nthat she has received from the Lord’s hand \ndouble for all her sins. \n3 A voice cries: \n“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord\, \nmake straight in the desert a highway for our God. \n4 Every valley shall be lifted up\, \nand every mountain and hill be made low; \nthe uneven ground shall become level\, \nand the rough places a plain. \n5 And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed\, \nand all flesh shall see it together\, \nfor the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” \n6 A voice says\, “Cry!” \nAnd I said\, “What shall I cry!” \nAll flesh is grass\, \nand all its beauty is like the flower of the field. \n7 The grass withers\, the flower fades\, \nwhen the breath of the Lord blows upon it; \nsurely the people is grass. \n8 The grass withers\, the flower fades; \nbut the word of our God will stand for ever. \n  \nActs of the Apostles 13:13-33 \nPaul and Barnabas in Antioch of Pisidia \n13 Now Paul and his company set sail from Paphos\, and came to Perga in Pamphylia. And John left them and returned to Jerusalem; 14 but they passed on from Perga and came to Antioch of Pisidia. And on the sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down. 15 After the reading of the law and the prophets\, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them\, saying\, “Brethren\, if you have any word of exhortation for the people\, say it.” 16 So Paul stood up\, and motioning with his hand said: \n“Men of Israel\, and you that fear God\, listen. 17 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt\, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it. 18 And for about forty years he bore with them in the wilderness. 19 And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan\, he gave them their land as an inheritance\, for about four hundred and fifty years. 20 And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. 21 Then they asked for a king; and God gave them Saul the son of Kish\, a man of the tribe of Benjamin\, for forty years. 22 And when he had removed him\, he raised up David to be their king; of whom he testified and said\, ‘I have found in David\, the son of Jesse\, a man after my heart\, who will do all my will.’ 23 Of this man’s posterity God has brought to Israel a Savior\, Jesus\, as he promised. 24 Before his coming John had preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And as John was finishing his course\, he said\, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No\, but after me one is coming\, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’ \n26 “Brethren\, sons of the family of Abraham\, and those among you that fear God\, to us has been sent the message of this salvation. 27 For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers\, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets which are read every sabbath\, fulfilled these by condemning him. 28 Though they could charge him with nothing deserving death\, yet they asked Pilate to have him killed. 29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him\, they took him down from the tree\, and laid him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead; 31 and for many days he appeared to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem\, who are now his witnesses to the people. 32 And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers\, 33 this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm\, \n‘You are my Son\, \ntoday I have begotten you.’ \n  \nEphesians 2:19-3:21 \n19 So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners\, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God\, 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets\, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone\, 21 in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22 in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. \nPaul’s Ministry to the Gentiles \n3 For this reason I\, Paul\, a prisoner for Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles—2 assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for you\, 3 how the mystery was made known to me by revelation\, as I have written briefly. 4 When you read this you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ\, 5 which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; 6 that is\, how the Gentiles are fellow heirs\, members of the same body\, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. \n7 Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God’s grace which was given me by the working of his power. 8 To me\, though I am the very least of all the saints\, this grace was given\, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ\, 9 and to make all men see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; 10 that through the Church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places. 11 This was according to the eternal purpose which he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord\, 12 in whom we have boldness and confidence of access through our faith in him. 13 So I ask you not to lose heart over what I am suffering for you\, which is your glory. \nPrayer for the Ephesians \n14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father\, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named\, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with might through his Spirit in the inner man\, 17 and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you\, being rooted and grounded in love\, 18 may have power to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth\, 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge\, that you may be filled with all the fulness of God. \n20 Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think\, 21 to him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus to all generations\, for ever and ever. Amen. \n  \nMark 6:14-29 \nThe Death of John the Baptist \n14 King Herod heard of it; for Jesus’ name had become known. Some said\, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him.” 15 But others said\, “It is Elijah.” And others said\, “It is a prophet\, like one of the prophets of old.” 16 But when Herod heard of it he said\, “John\, whom I beheaded\, has been raised.” 17 For Herod had sent and seized John\, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias\, his brother Philip’s wife; because he had married her. 18 For John said to Herod\, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” 19 And Herodias had a grudge against him\, and wanted to kill him. But she could not\, 20 for Herod feared John\, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man\, and kept him safe. When he heard him\, he was much perplexed; and yet he heard him gladly. 21 But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and the leading men of Galilee. 22 For when Herodias’ daughter came in and danced\, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl\, “Ask me for whatever you wish\, and I will grant it.” 23 And he vowed to her\, “Whatever you ask me\, I will give you\, even half of my kingdom.” 24 And she went out\, and said to her mother\, “What shall I ask?” And she said\, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king\, and asked\, saying\, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” 26 And the king was exceedingly sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. 27 And immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard and gave orders to bring his head. He went and beheaded him in the prison\, 28 and brought his head on a platter\, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard of it\, they came and took his body\, and laid it in a tomb.

SUMMARY:Feast of the Epiphany
DESCRIPTION:Feast of the Epiphany \n  \nNumbers 24:2-9\, 15-25 \nBalaam’s Third Oracle \n2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes\, and saw Israel encamping tribe by tribe. And the Spirit of God came upon him\, 3 and he took up his discourse\, and said\, \n“The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor\, \nthe oracle of the man whose eye is opened\, \n4 the oracle of him who hears the words of God\, \nwho sees the vision of the Almighty\, \nfalling down\, but having his eyes uncovered: \n5 How fair are your tents\, O Jacob\, \nyour encampments\, O Israel! \n6 Like valleys that stretch afar\, \nlike gardens beside a river\, \nlike aloes that the Lord has planted\, \nlike cedar trees beside the waters. \n7 Water shall flow from his buckets\, \nand his seed shall be in many waters\, \nhis king shall be higher than Agag\, \nand his kingdom shall be exalted. \n8 God brings him out of Egypt; \nhe has as it were the horns of the wild ox\, \nhe shall eat up the nations his adversaries\, \nand shall break their bones in pieces\, \nand pierce them through with his arrows. \n9  He lurked\, he lay down like a lion\, \nand like a lioness; who will rouse him up? \nBlessed be every one who blesses you\, \nand cursed be every one who curses you.” \n15 And he took up his discourse\, and said\, \n“The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor\, \nthe oracle of the man whose eye is opened\, \n16 the oracle of him who hears the words of God\, \nand knows the knowledge of the Most High\, \nwho sees the vision of the Almighty\, \nfalling down\, but having his eyes uncovered: \n17 I see him\, but not now; \nI behold him\, but not near: \na star shall come forth out of Jacob\, \nand a scepter shall rise out of Israel; \nit shall crush the forehead of Moab\, \nand break down all the sons of Sheth. \n18 Edom shall be dispossessed\, \nSeir also\, his enemies\, shall be dispossessed\, \nwhile Israel does valiantly. \n19 By Jacob shall dominion be exercised\, \nand the survivors of cities be destroyed!” \n20 Then he looked on Amalek\, and took up his discourse\, and said\, \n“Amalek was the first of the nations\, \nbut in the end he shall come to destruction.” \n21 And he looked on the Kenite\, and took up his discourse\, and said\, \n“Enduring is your dwelling place\, \nand your nest is set in the rock; \n22 nevertheless Kain shall be wasted. \nHow long shall Asshur take you away captive!” \n23 And he took up his discourse\, and said\, \n“Alas\, who shall live when God does this? \n24 But ships shall come from Kittim \nand shall afflict Asshur and Eber; \nand he also shall come to destruction.” \n25 Then Balaam rose\, and went back to his place; and Balak also went his way. \n  \nIsaiah 4:2-5\, 11:1-5; 12:4-6 \n2 In that day the branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious\, and the fruit of the land shall be the pride and glory of the survivors of Israel. 3 And he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy\, every one who has been recorded for life in Jerusalem\, 4 when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgment and by a spirit of burning. 5 Then the Lordwill create over the whole site of Mount Zion and over her assemblies a cloud by day\, and smoke and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory there will be a canopy and a pavilion. \nThe Shoot from the Stump of Jesse and the Peaceful Kingdom \n1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse\, \nand a branch shall grow out of his roots. \n2  And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him\, \nthe spirit of wisdom and understanding\, \nthe spirit of counsel and might\, \nthe spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. \n3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. \nHe shall not judge by what his eyes see\, \nor decide by what his ears hear; \n4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor\, \nand decide with equity for the meek of the earth; \nand he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth\, \nand with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. \n5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist\, \nand faithfulness the belt of his loins. \n4 And you will say in that day: \n“Give thanks to the Lord\, \ncall upon his name; \nmake known his deeds among the nations\, \nproclaim that his name is exalted. \n5 “Sing praises to the Lord\, for he has done gloriously; \nlet this be known in all the earth. \n6 Shout\, and sing for joy\, O inhabitant of Zion\, \nfor great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.” \n  \n  \nTitus 2:11-3:7 \n11 For the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men\, 12 training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions\, and to live sober\, upright\, and godly lives in this world\, 13 awaiting our blessed hope\, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ\, 14  who gave himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. \n15 Declare these things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you. \nMaintain Good Deeds \n1 Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities\, to be obedient\, to be ready for any honest work\, 2 to speak evil of no one\, to avoid quarreling\, to be gentle\, and to show perfect courtesy toward all men. 3 For we ourselves were once foolish\, disobedient\, led astray\, slaves to various passions and pleasures\, passing our days in malice and envy\, hated by men and hating one another; 4 but when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared\, 5 he saved us\, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness\, but in virtue of his own mercy\, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit\, 6 which he poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior\, 7 so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. \n  \nMatthew 3:1-17 \nThe Preaching of John the Baptist \n3 In those days came John the Baptist\, preaching in the wilderness of Judea\, 2 Repent\, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” 3  For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said\, \n“The voice of one crying in the wilderness: \nPrepare the way of the Lord\, \nmake his paths straight.” \n4 Now John wore a garment of camel’s hair\, and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan\, 6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan\, confessing their sins. \n7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism\, he said to them\, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruit that befits repentance\, 9 and do not presume to say to yourselves\, ‘We have Abraham as our father’; for I tell you\, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 10  Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. \n11 “I baptize you with water for repentance\, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I\, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 12  His winnowing fork is in his hand\, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the granary\, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” \nThe Baptism of Jesus \n13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John\, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him\, saying\, “I need to be baptized by you\, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him\, “Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized\, he went up immediately from the water\, and behold\, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove\, and alighting on him; 17 and behold\, a voice from heaven\, saying\, “This is my beloved Son\, with whom I am well pleased.”

SUMMARY:2nd Sunday after Christmas
DESCRIPTION:2nd Sunday after Christmas \n  \nExodus 2:1-10 \n  \nThe Sons of Israel \n1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob\, each with his household: 2 Reuben\, Simeon\, Levi\, and Judah\, 3 Issachar\, Zebulun\, and Benjamin\, 4 Dan and Naphtali\, Gad and Asher. 10 Come\, let us deal shrewdly with them\, lest they multiply\, and\, if war befall us\, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” \n  \n  \nIsaiah 49:1-6 \n  \n1 Listen to me\, O islands\, and pay attention\, you peoples from afar. The Lord called me from the womb\, from the body of my mother he named my name. 2 He made my mouth like a sharp sword\, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow\, in his quiver he hid me away. 3 And he said to me\, “You are my servant\, Israel\, in whom I will be glorified.” \n4 But I said\, “I have labored in vain\, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my right is with the Lord\, and my recompense with my God.” 5 And now the Lord says\, who formed me from the womb to be his servant\, to bring Jacob back to him\, and that Israel might be gathered to him\, for I am honored in the eyes of the Lord\, and my God has become my strength— 6 he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the preserved of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations\, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” \n  \n2Timothy 2:16-26 \n  \nA Workman Approved by God \n  \n16 Avoid such godless chatter\, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness\, 17 and their talk will eat its way like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus\, 18 who have swerved from the truth by holding that the resurrection is past already. They are upsetting the faith of some. 19 But God’s firm foundation stands\, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his\,” and\, “Let every one who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.” \n20 In a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and earthenware\, and some for noble use\, some for ignoble. 21 If any one purifies himself from what is ignoble\, then he will be a vessel for noble use\, consecrated and useful to the master of the house\, ready for any good work. 22 So shun youthful passions and aim at righteousness\, faith\, love\, and peace\, along with those who call upon the Lord from a pure heart. 23 Have nothing to do with stupid\, senseless controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. 24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kindly to every one\, an apt teacher\, forbearing\, 25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant that they will repent and come to know the truth\, 26 and they may escape from the snare of the devil\, after being captured by him to do his will. \n  \n  \nLuke 2:21-52 \n  \nJesus Is Circumcised and Named \n21 And at the end of eight days\, when he was circumcised\, he was called Jesus\, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. \nJesus Is Presented in the Temple \n22 And when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses\, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord\, “Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord\, “a pair of turtledoves\, or two young pigeons.” 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem\, whose name was Simeon\, and this man was righteous and devout\, looking for the consolation of Israel\, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus\, to do for him according to the custom of the law\, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said\, 29 “Lord\, now let your servant depart in peace\, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples\, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles\, and for glory to your people Israel.” 33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him; 34 and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother\, “Behold\, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel\, and for a sign that is spoken against 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also)\, that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.” 36 And there was a prophetess\, Anna\, the daughter of Phanuel\, of the tribe of Asher; she was of a great age\, having lived with her husband seven years from her virginity\, 37 and as a widow till she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple\, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks to God\, and spoke of him to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. \nThe Return to Nazareth \n39 And when they had performed everything according to the law of the Lord\, they returned into Galilee\, to their own city\, Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong\, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. \nThe Boy Jesus in the Temple \n41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old\, they went up according to custom; 43 and when the feast was ended\, as they were returning\, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it\, 44 but supposing him to be in the company they went a day’s journey\, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances; 45 and when they did not find him\, they returned to Jerusalem\, seeking him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple\, sitting among the teachers\, listening to them and asking them questions; 47 and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 And when they saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him\, “Son\, why have you treated us so? Behold\, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously.” 49 And he said to them\, “How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” 50 And they did not understand the saying which he spoke to them. 51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth\, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature\,and in favor with God and man.

SUMMARY:Feast of the Circumcision of the Lord
DESCRIPTION:Feast of the Circumcision of the Lord \n  \nGenesis 17:1-22 \n  \nSix Days of Creation and the Sabbath \n1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void\, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. 3 And God said\, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day\, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning\, one day. 6 And God said\, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters\, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 And God made the firmament and separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament. And it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning\, a second day. 9 And God said\, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place\, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth\, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11 And God said\, “Let the earth put forth vegetation\, plants yielding seed\, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed\, each according to its kind\, upon the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation\, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds\, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed\, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning\, a third day. 14 And God said\, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years\, 15 and let them be lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights\, the greater light to rule the day\, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. 17 And God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth\, 18 to rule over the day and over the night\, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning\, a fourth day. 20 And God said\, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures\, and let birds fly above the earth across the firmament of the heavens.” 21 So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves\, with which the waters swarm\, according to their kinds\, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them\, saying\, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas\, and let birds multiply on the earth.” \n  \nIsaiah 42:18-25 \n  \n18 Hear\, you deaf; and look\, you blind\, that you may see! 19 Who is blind but my servant\, or deaf as my messenger whom I send? Who is blind as my dedicated one\, or blind as the servant of the Lord? 20 He sees many things\, but does not observe them; his ears are open\, but he does not hear. 21 The Lord was pleased\, for his righteousness’ sake\, to magnify his law and make it glorious. 22 But this is a people robbed and plundered\, they are all of them trapped in holes and hidden in prisons; they have become a prey with none to rescue\, a spoil with none to say\, “Restore!” 23 Who among you will give ear to this\, will attend and listen for the time to come? \n24 Who gave up Jacob to the spoiler\, and Israel to the robbers? Was it not the Lord\, against whom we have sinned\, in whose ways they would not walk\, and whose law they would not obey? 25 So he poured upon him the heat of his anger and the might of battle; it set him on fire round about\, but he did not understand; it burned him\, but he did not take it to heart. \n  \n  \nGalatians 5:13-26 \n  \n13 For you were called to freedom\, brethren; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh\, but through love be servants of one another. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word\, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another take heed that you are not consumed by one another. \nThe Works of the Flesh and the Fruit of the Spirit \n16 But I say\, walk by the Spirit\, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit\, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh; for these are opposed to each other\, to prevent you from doing what you would. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law. 19 ow the works of the flesh are plain: immorality\, impurity\, licentiousness\, 20 idolatry\, sorcery\, enmity\, strife\, jealousy\, anger\, selfishness\, dissension\, party spirit\, 21 envy\, drunkenness\, carousing\, and the like. I warn you\, as I warned you before\, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love\, joy\, peace\, patience\, kindness\, goodness\, faithfulness\, 23 gentleness\, self-control; against such there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit\, let us also walk by the Spirit. 26 Let us have no self-conceit\, no provoking of one another\, no envy of one another. \n  \n  \nLuke 2:21-40\, 52 \nThe Birth of John the Baptist Foretold \n  \n21 And at the end of eight days\, when he was circumcised\, he was called Jesus\, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. 27 And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus\, to do for him according to the custom of the law\, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said\, 29 “Lord\, now let your servant depart in peace\, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples\, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles\, and for glory to your people Israel.” 33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him; 34 and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother\, “Behold\, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel\, and for a sign that is spoken against 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also)\, \nthat thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.” 36 And there was a prophetess\, Anna\, the daughter of Phanuel\, of the tribe of Asher; she was of a great age\, having lived with her husband seven years from her virginity\, 37 and as a widow till she was eighty-four. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature\, and in favor with God and man.

SUMMARY:1st Sunday after Christmas
DESCRIPTION:1st Sunday after Christmas \n  \nGenesis 21:1-21 \n  \n1 The Lord visited Sarah as he had said\, and the Lorddid to Sarah as he had promised. 2 And Sarah conceived\, and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him. 3 Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him\, whom Sarah bore him\, Isaac. 4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old\, as God had commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 And Sarah said\, “God has made laughter for me; every one who hears will laugh over me.” 7 And she said\, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would suckle children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.” \nHagar and Ishmael Sent Away \n8 And the child grew\, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. 9 But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian\, whom she had borne to Abraham\, playing with her son Isaac. 10 So she said to Abraham\, “Cast out this slave woman with her son; for the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.” 11 And the thing was very displeasing to Abraham on account of his son. 12 But God said to Abraham\, “Be not displeased because of the lad and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you\, do as she tells you\, for through Isaac shall your descendants be named. 13 And I will make a nation of the son of the slave woman also\, because he is your offspring.” 14 So Abraham rose early in the morning\, and took bread and a skin of water\, and gave it to Hagar\, putting it on her shoulder\, along with the child\, and sent her away. And she departed\, and wandered in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.15 When the water in the skin was gone\, she cast the child under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went\, and sat down over against him a good way off\, about the distance of a bowshot; for she said\, “Let me not look upon the death of the child.” And as she sat over against him\, the child lifted up his voice and wept. 17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven\, and said to her\, “What troubles you\, Hagar? Fear not; for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise\, lift up the lad\, and hold him fast with your hand; for I will make him a great nation.” 19 Then God opened her eyes\, and she saw a well of water; and she went\, and filled the skin with water\, and gave the lad a drink. 20 And God was with the lad\, and he grew up; he lived in the wilderness\, and became an expert with the bow. 21 He lived in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt. \n  \n1Samuel 1:19-28 \n  \n19 They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife\, and the Lordremembered her; 20 and in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son\, and she called his name Samuel\, for she said\, “I have asked him of the Lord.” 21 And the man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice\, and to pay his vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up\, for she said to her husband\, “As soon as the child is weaned\, I will bring him\, that he may appear in the presence of the Lord\, and abide there for ever.” 23 Elkanah her husband said to her\, “Do what seems best to you\, wait until you have weaned him; only\, may the Lord establish his word.” So the woman remained and nursed her son\, until she weaned him. 24 And when she had weaned him\, she took him up with her\, along with a three-year-old bull\, an ephah of flour\, and a skin of wine; and she brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh; and the child was young. 25 Then they slew the bull\, and they brought the child to Eli. 26 And she said\, “Oh\, my lord! As you live\, my lord\, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence\, praying to the Lord. 27 For this child I prayed; and the Lord has granted me my petition which I made to him. 28 Therefore I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives\, he is lent to the Lord.” \nAnd they worshiped the Lord there. \n  \nGalatians 4:18-5:1 \nPaul Reproves the Galatians \n18 For a good purpose it is always good to be made much of\, and not only when I am present with you. 19 My little children\, with whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you! 20 I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone\, for I am perplexed about you. \nThe Allegory of Hagar and Sarah \n21 Tell me\, you who desire to be under law\, do you not hear the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons\, one by a slave and one by a free woman. 23 But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh\, the son of the free woman through promise. 24 Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai\, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem\, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free\, and she is our mother. 27 For it is written\, “Rejoice\, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and shout\, you who are not with labor pains; for the desolate has more children than she who has a husband.” 28 Now we\, brethren\, like Isaac\, are children of promise. 29 But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit\, so it is now. 30 But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave and her son; for the son of the slave shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31 So\, brethren\, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman. \nChristian Freedom \n1 For freedom Christ has set us free; stand fast therefore\, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMatthew 2:1-23 \n  \n1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king\, behold\, Wise Men from the East came to Jerusalem\, saying\, 2 Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East\, and have come to worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this\, he was troubled\, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people\, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him\, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: 6 ‘And you\, O Bethlehem\, in the land of Judah\, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler \nwho will govern my people Israel.’ ” 7 Then Herod summoned the Wise Men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; 8 and he sent them to Bethlehem\, saying\, “Go and search diligently for the child\, and when you have found him bring me word\, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 When they had heard the king they went their way; and behold\, the star which they had seen in the East went before them\, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star\, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; 11 and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother\, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then\, opening their treasures\, they offered him gifts\, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod\, they departed to their own country by another way. \nThe Escape to Egypt \n13 Now when they had departed\, behold\, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said\, “Rise\, take the child and his mother\, and flee to Egypt\, and remain there till I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child\, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night\, and departed to Egypt\, 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet\, “Out of Egypt have I called my son.” \n16 Then Herod\, when he saw that he had been tricked by the Wise Men\, was in a furious rage\, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under\, according to the time which he had ascertained from the Wise Men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: 18 “A voice was heard in Ramah\, wailing and loud lamentation\, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled\, because they were no more.” \nThe Return from Egypt \n19 But when Herod died\, behold\, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt\, saying\, 20 “Rise\, take the child and his mother\, and go to the land of Israel\, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.” 21 And he rose and took the child and his mother\, and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus reigned over Judea in place of his father Herod\, he was afraid to go there\, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. 23 And he went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth\, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled. “He shall be called a Nazarene.”

SUMMARY:Feast of the Holy Innocents
DESCRIPTION:Feast of the Holy Innocents – December 27 \n  \nFrom the Memorial of All Martyrs & Confessors \nDaniel 3:25-45 \n  \nFrom the Memorial of All Martyrs & Confessors \nActs of the Apostles 6:8-15 \n  \nThe Arrest of Stephen \n  \n8 And Stephen\, full of grace and power\, did great wonders and signs among the people. 9 Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)\, and of the Cyrenians\, and of the Alexandrians\, and of those from Cilicia and Asia\, arose and disputed with Stephen. 10 But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke. 11 Then they secretly instigated men\, who said\, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 12 And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes\, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council\, 13 and set up false witnesses who said\, “This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law; 14 for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place\, and will change the customs which Moses delivered to us.” 15 And gazing at him\, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel. \n  \nFrom the Memorial of All Martyrs & Confessors \nHebrews 11:3-10\, 32-12:2 \n  \n3 By faith we understand that the world was created by the word of God\, so that what is seen was made out of things which do not appear. \nThe Examples of Abel\, Enoch\, and Noah \n4 By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain\, through which he received approval as righteous\, God bearing witness by accepting his gifts; he died\, but through his faith he is still speaking. 5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death; and he was not found\, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was attested as having pleased God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. 7 By faith Noah\, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen\, took heed and constructed an ark for the saving of his household; by this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness which comes by faith. \nThe Faith of Abraham \n8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place which he was to receive as an inheritance; and he went out\, not knowing where he was to go. 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise\, as in a foreign land\, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob\, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he looked forward to the city which has foundations\, whose builder and maker is God. \n  \nMatthew 2:13-18 \n  \nThe Escape to Egypt \n13 Now when they had departed\, behold\, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said\, “Rise\, take the child and his mother\, and flee to Egypt\, and remain there till I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child\, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night\, and departed to Egypt\, 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: 18  “A voice was heard in Ramah\, wailing and loud lamentation\, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled\, \nbecause they were no more.”

SUMMARY:Feast of the Virgin Mary
DESCRIPTION:Feast of the Virgin Mary – December 26 \nExodus 15:11-21; Micah 6:1-5; Jeremiah 31:13-17 \n11 “Who is like you\, O Lord\, among the gods? Who is like you\, majestic in holiness\, terrible in glorious deeds\, doing wonders? 12 You stretched out your right hand\, the earth swallowed them.13 “You have led in your merciful love the people whom you have redeemed\, \nyou have guided them by your strength to your holy abode. 14 The peoples have heard\, they tremble; pangs have seized on the inhabitants of Philistia. 15 Now are the chiefs of Edom dismayed; the leaders of Moab\, trembling seizes them; all the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away. 16 Terror and dread fall upon them; because of the greatness of your arm\, they are as still as a stone\, till your people\, O Lord\, pass by\, till the people pass by whom you have purchased.17 You will bring them in\, and plant them on your own mountain\, the place\, O Lord\, which you have made for your abode\, the sanctuary\, O Lord\, which your hands have established. 18 The Lord will reign for ever and ever.” 19 For when the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea\, the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them; but the sons of Israel walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea. 20 Then Miriam\, the prophetess\, the sister of Aaron\, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and dancing. 21 And Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the Lord\, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.” \n  \nWhat the Lord Requires \nHear what the Lord says: Arise\, plead your case before the mountains\, and let the hills hear your voice. 2 Hear\, you mountains\, the controversy of the Lord\, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for the Lord has a controversy with his people\, and he will contend with Israel. 3 “O my people\, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me! 4 For I brought you up from the land of Egypt\, and redeemed you from the house of bondage; and I sent before you Moses\, Aaron\, and Miriam. 5 O my people\, remember what Balak king of Moab devised\, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him\, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal\, that you may know the saving acts of the Lord.” \n13 Then shall the maidens rejoice in the dance\, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy\, will comfort them\, and give them gladness for sorrow. 14 I will feast the soul of the priests with abundance\, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness\, says the Lord.” 15 Thus says the Lord: “A voice is heard in Ramah\, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children\, because they are not.” 16 Thus says the Lord: “Keep your voice from weeping\, and your eyes from tears; for your work shall be rewarded\, says the Lord\, and they shall come back from the land of the enemy. 17 There is hope for your future\, says the Lord\, and your children shall come back to their own country \n  \nActs of the Apostles 1:1-14 \n  \nIn the first book\, O Theophilus\, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach\, 2 until the day when he was taken up\, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. This Jesus\, who was taken up from you into heaven\, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” \nMatthias Chosen to Replace Judas \n  \n12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet\, which is near Jerusalem\, a sabbath day’s journey away; 13 and when they had entered\, they went up to the upper room\, where they were staying\, Peter and John and James and Andrew\, Philip and Thomas\, Bartholomew and Matthew\, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. 14 All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer\, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus\, and with his brethren. \n  \nRomans 16:1-27 \nPersonal Greetings \nI commend to you our sister Phoebe\, a deaconess of the Church at Cenchre-ae\, 2 that you may receive her in the Lord as befits the saints\, and help her in whatever she may require from you\, for she has been a helper of many and of myself as well. 3 Greet Prisca and Aquila\, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus\, 4 who risked their necks for my life\, to whom not only I but also all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks; 5 greet also the church in their house. 18 For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ\, but their own appetites\,and by fair and flattering words they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded. 19 For while your obedience is known to all\, so that I rejoice over you\, I would have you wise as to what is good and guileless as to what is evil; 20 then the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. \n21 Timothy\, my fellow worker\, greets you; so do Lucius and Jason and Sosipater\, my kinsmen.22 I Tertius\, the writer of this letter\, greet you in the Lord 23 Gaius\, who is host to me and to the whole Church\, greets you. Erastus\, the city treasurer\, and our brother Quartus\, greet you. \nFinal Doxology \n  \n25 Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ\, according to the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret for long ages 26 but is now disclosed and through the prophetic writings is made known to all nations\, according to the command of the eternal God\, to bring about the obedience of faith—27 to the only wise God be glory for evermore through Jesus Christ! Amen. \n  \nJohn 2:12; Matthew 13:53\, 12:46-50; Luke 11:27-28; John 19:26-27; Luke 1:46-56 \n  \n12 After this he went down to Capernaum\, with his mother and his brethren and his disciples; and there they stayed for a few days. \n  \nThe Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth \n53 And when Jesus had finished these parables\, he went away from there\, \n  \n46 While he was still speaking to the people\, behold\, his mother and his brethren stood outside\, asking to speak to him. 48 But he replied to the man who told him\, “Who is my mother\, and who are my brethren?” 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples\, he said\, “Here are my mother and my brethren! 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother\, and sister\, and mother.” \n  \nTrue Blessedness \n  \n27 As he said this\, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him\, “Blessed is the womb that bore you\, and the breasts that you sucked!” 28 But he said\, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” \n  \n26 When Jesus saw his mother\, and the disciple whom he loved standing near\, he said to his mother\, “Woman\, behold\, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple\, “Behold\, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. \n  \n46 And Mary said\, “My soul magnifies the Lord\, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior\, 48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold\, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me\, and holy is his name.50 And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation.51 He has shown strength with his arm\, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts\, 52 he has put down the mighty from their thrones\, and exalted those of low degree; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things\, and the rich he has sent empty away. 54 He has helped his servant Israel\, in remembrance of his mercy\, 55 as he spoke to our fathers\, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever.” 56 And Mary remained with her about three months\, and returned to her home.

SUMMARY:The Feast of the Nativity of the Lord
DESCRIPTION:The Feast of the Nativity of the Lord – December 25 \n  \nIsaiah 7:10-16; 9:1-3\, 6-7 \n  \nThe Sign of Immanuel \n  \n10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz\, 11 “Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” 12 But Ahaz said\, “I will not ask\, and I will not put the Lordto the test.” 13 And he said\, “Hear then\, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men\, that you weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold\, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son\, and shall call his name Immanu-el.15 He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16 For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good\, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted. \n  \nThe Righteous Reign \nBut there will be no gloom for her that was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali\, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea\, the land beyond the Jordan\, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness\, on them has light shined.3 You have multiplied the nation\, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest\, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. \n  \n6 For to us a child is born\, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder\, and his name will be called “Wonderful Counselor\, Mighty God\, Everlasting Father\, Prince of Peace.” 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end\, upon the throne of David\, and over his kingdom\, to establish it\, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and for evermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. \n  \n  \nMicah 4:1-3; 5:2-5\, 8-9 \n  \nIt shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord \nshall be established as the highest of the mountains\, and shall be raised up above the hills; \nand peoples shall flow to it\, 2 and many nations shall come\, and say: “Come\, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord\, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law\, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 3 He shall judge between many peoples\, and shall decide for strong nations afar off; \nand they shall beat their swords into plowshares\, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation\, neither shall they learn war any more; \n  \n2 But you\, O Bethlehem Ephrathah\, who are little to be among the clans of Judah\, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel\, whose origin is from of old\, from ancient days. 3 Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who has labor pains has brought forth; then the rest of his brethren shall return to the sons of Israel. 4 And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord\, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall dwell secure\, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth.5 And this shall be peace\, when the Assyrian comes into our land and treads upon our soil\, that we will raise against him seven shepherds and eight princes of men; \n  \n8 And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the nations\, in the midst of many peoples\, like a lion among the beasts of the forest\, like a young lion among the flocks of sheep\, which\, when it goes through\, treads down and tears in pieces\, and there is none to deliver. 9 Your hand shall be lifted up over your adversaries\, and all your enemies shall be cut off. \n  \nGalatians 3:15-4:6 \nThe Promise to Abraham \nTo give a human example\, brethren: no one annuls even a man’s will\, or adds to it\, once it has been ratified. 16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say\, “And to offsprings\,” referring to many; but\, referring to one\, “And to your offspring\,” which is Christ. 17 This is what I mean: the law\, which came four hundred and thirty years afterward\, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God\, so as to make the promise void. 18 For if the inheritance is by the law\, it is no longer by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise. \nThe Purpose of the Law \n19 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions\, till the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made; and it was ordained by angels through an intermediary. 20 Now an intermediary implies more than one; but God is one. 21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not; for if a law had been given which could make alive\, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 22 But the Scripture consigned all things to sin\, that what was promised to faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. 23 Now before faith came\, we were confined under the law\, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. 24 So that the law was our custodian until Christ came\, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come\, we are no longer under a custodian; 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God\, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek\, there is neither slave nor free\, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s\, then you are Abraham’s offspring\, heirs according to promise. I mean that the heir\, as long as he is a child\, is no better than a slave\, though he is the owner of all the estate; 2 but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. 3 So with us; when we were children\, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe. 4 But when the time had fully come\, God sent forth his Son\, born of woman\, born under the law\, 5 to redeem those who were under the law\, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons\, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts\, crying\, “Abba! Father!” \n  \nLuke 2:1-20 \n  \nIn those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. 2 This was the first enrollment\, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be enrolled\, each to his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee\, from the city of Nazareth\, to Judea\, to the city of David\, which is called Bethlehem\, because he was of the house and lineage of David\, 5 to be enrolled with Mary his betrothed\, who was with child. 6 And while they were there\, the time came for her to be delivered. 7 And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths\, and laid him in a manger\, because there was no place for them in the inn. \nThe Shepherds and the Angels \n8 And in that region there were shepherds out in the field\, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them\, and the glory of the Lord shone around them\, and they were filled with fear. 10 And the angel said to them\, “Be not afraid; for behold\, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; 11 for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior\, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying\, 14 “Glory to God in the highest\, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased.” 15 When the angels went away from them into heaven\, the shepherds said to one another\, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened\, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste\, and found Mary and Joseph\, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child; 18 and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary kept all these things\, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned\, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen\, as it had been told them. \n
